  4. History Of The People • A small group of Quaker families decided to move to a peaceful (non military) country due to the drafting for the Korean war. They decided Costa Rica was the place for them and settled in the place we now know as Monte Verde in 1949. They bought the land from the government and divided it amongst them according to who could afford the most. Menu

  5. The Locals • At the time Monte Verde was founded, there were some local families and squatters throughout the area, but more so down in the neighboring towns of Cerro Plano, and Santa Elena. • Santa Elena is now what could be considered the “downtown” area of Monte Verde. Menu

  6. Lifestyle in Monte Verde • The Quakers found exactly what they were looking for; a peaceful paradise. This mountain is a feast for the eyes, mixing huge amounts of wild life and plant life. A perfect place to raise their children. They farmed their own crops, and bought groceries from the near towns. Living a very simple life, and starting from 0. Menu

More Lifestyle • Dairy Farming was the beginning of MV’s work source. • They Founded a Dairy plant that brought many jobs. • Community and Sharing is essential to the Quaker ways. • Monthly pot lucks, holiday celebrations, square dance Saturday nights are among the many things that are shared.   8. Conservation is Begun • It was with the arrival in 1970 of George and Harriett Powell, biology graduate students from California, that the relatively new concept of conservation was introduced. They came to Monteverde to work on George’s doctorate research and rented a small cabin on the farm of Wolf and Lucky Guindon. Background picture is of Wolf Guidon (My Grandpa) Menu

When the Powells realized how quickly the forest was disappearing, and recognizing that there was a wealth of species within that forest that would disappear before even being identified, they decided they had to do something to slow down the deforestation. SoTheyhired Wolf Guindon, who knew this forest and most of the homesteaders. Then raised money to purchase the land and save it! Menu

  11. The Nature • “Straddling the Continental Divide at 4,662 feet (1,440 m) Monteverdeis privileged to receive a steady supply of clouds and the life-giving moisture that they contain. This moisture, often in the form of fog, catches on the branches of the tallest trees and drips down to the other organisms below. This helps to support a complex and far-reaching ecosystem. Menu

  12. Nature: Diversity and Facts • People are attracted to Monte Verde because of its incredible diversity in plant life and animal life. On the Following Slide you will find details on how big the population of this forest really is. Menu

  16. The Adventure • Since Monteverde Became a tourist meca, there is a huge variety of things that have become available for locals and visitors to enjoy. • From calm hikes through the forest, to zip lining through the tops of the trees, there is something for everyone to enjoy Menu

  22. Business of Monte Verde • The first thing that the Quakers set up for income was the dairy plant. But since then there have been many things that have changed. • Tourism became the primary source of income for everyone and thus many jobs were created. Menu

  23. Many People turned their homes into bed and breakfast hotels, and in time bigger ones were made, and many restaurants, souvenir shops, and the like. • Monte Verde now has many options for places to stay. And is very tourism centered in its culture Menu
