2. Where to start Oldham is ranked the 43rd most deprived local authority out of 354 in England.
There are 20 local area wards within the Borough of Oldham and these are some of the areas we have worked in which rank 1-5 out of the 20, the highest deprived areas in Oldham!! Which goes without saying health inequalities is high!!
This is where we chose to start with the Self Care Courses!! Oldham is ranked the 43rd most deprived local authority out of 354 in England.

First of all we spoke to professionals that we knew where running groups in the targeted areas, from there we made arrangements to go along and speak to the groups about the course, linking in with already established groups is a good starting point, from here we moved onto community groups and then work places. Leaflets are another way of getting the message out there but there is not a better way than the actual contact, person to person. Find out what promotional events are going on and link in with them!!
We make initial contact over the phone, then meetings take place and from here dates are usually set to deliver presentations about the course, this could be to the group we are going to be delivering to or management etc if its something they are looking at their members staff taking part in. Having stands at promotional events are another good way of promoting the project. Outreach work is essential.
We have delivered a number of presentations to private, public, community and voluntary sector groups and depending on the size of the group and who we are delivering to can help dictate the style of presentation that we use, we have a standard power point presentation that we adapt for the purpose of the group to who we are delivering, we have the same standard presentation in a flipchart style, or we may just talk about the project with no presentation at all. We use our own judgement to depict which style we use but the initial meeting with the group or organisation helps inform the decision. The presentation takes them through the six activities of what the course is about.
A favourite of ours is the taster session as this gives a flavour of what we cover in the course! Something which are going to be doing with all of you here today!!
Firstly though I am going to quickly take you through a presentation that was adapted for a local regeneration programme in Oldham
New Deal for Communities and part of their remit is to reduce health inequalities.
