  1. Creating a thesis statement: Your “Age of Responsibility” paper Language Arts 2Honors

  2. A thesis statement: • Is in the introduction (usually last sentence in your intro paragraph) • Answers the prompt • Is a roadmap to your essay • Subject + opinion + plan(if it works grammatically) • Ideally one sentence (though this doesn’t always work grammatically)

  3. Wow! Such a big job for a little sentence! What will my thesis look like for this paper? • Your thesis statement for this paper will include the following: • Based on our discussions, your research, The Greenblatt article, and your own opinion, what is the age of adulthood? • Your thesis might also include the reasons why you believe this. • Your thesis can include other relevant , but significant opinions.

  4. To get started… • Identify the subject of your paper. • Brainstorm your opinions on the topic and then decide what your opinion is. • Create a statement that includes the: • subject + opinion + Plan(optional)=THESIS

  5. The Bad and the Ugly • The Greenblatt article is about the age of responsibility. • We had to read an article about Greenblatt , and it was boring. BAD UGLY 

  6. Try using an “Occasion / Position Statement “ Although/Despite/While/Since/Even though/Whenever Some Samples • Although the legal age of adulthood is 18 in the United States, the age of adulthood should be changed to twenty-one and all adult privileges and responsibilities should go with that age. What’s your opinion Include key words from the prompt

  7. Try using an “Occasion / Position Statement” Although/Despite/While/Since/Even though/Whenever Another sample • Even though Greenblatt argues that young people are confused with the age of responsibility, I think that he overlooks the fact that many young people have been familiar with the different ages of legal rights and must earn privileges and responsibilities as they develop and mature.
