  1. Charles Chaney’s VR Mastery • Curriculum for Increasing Verbal Reasoning Scores 1

  2. Chaney’s VR Strategies • Neuro-Visual Programming. • This methodology is centered on mental imagery. • The components of NVP. • Neuro: Relates to the nervous system and its processes. • Emphasis on the brain’s ability to use the senses to perceive images and then translate that information into meaning and perception. --Visual: Concerns the way humans use sight and mental imagery to understand the world. • Emphasis on using the mind to generate a series of images that reflect the words on the page. • Programming: Connects learning with the ability to capitalize on the plasticity of our neuronal connections. • Emphasis on practicing mental visualization while you read. 2

  3. Cheney’s VR Strategies • How NVP works. • Train your brain to visualize in great detail the meaning of what the eyes read on the computer screen. • Transform the ideas of each sentence into a collection of pictures and movies that interact with each other to ultimately reflect the entire meaning of the passage. • Caution: NVP requires significant practice to master. • About six months of reading difficult books for 2-3 hours every day. • About a month or so before attempting NVP, you should perfect your reading mechanics if you struggle with reading. • Are you a strong reader? • You do NOT skip over words or miss key punctuation. 3

  4. Cheney’s VR Strategies • Using NVP for the first time. • Begin with a familiar place. • A flat surface or mirror with no distracting images or objects cluttering it. • Create a mental drawing of this sentence: “The dog ran to the castle.” • Use a red marker and make the drawing as simple as possible. • Do this mental drawing several times until you recall every detail. • Did you conceptualize an image to represent action? • Allow symbols to become your mental guides. • Common symbols like lines, arrows, circles, etc. can add important meaning to the images. • Example: Horizontal lines can reveal connections, while vertical lines show separation. • Example: Arrows can be used to represent direction, motion, and intention. • Example: Circles can represent completeness, importance or self-sufficiency. • Create your own inventory of symbols to represent key verbal • Your ability to handle more complex reading material will grow as you devleop your ability to represent complex sentences using images and symbols. 4

  5. Cheney’s VR Strategies • Create mental arenas in which to place your images/symbols. • A familiar room or imaginary room. • A familiar house or imaginary house. • Your home street. • Your mental arena should be based on your ability to handle complex passages. • You must assign meaning to each of the places of your mental arena. 5
