  1. Common health problem The disjunction of medical knowledge and the biased perception of alternative medicine A little on Traditional Chinese Medicine (as an example)

  2. Background • “Conventional” medical science students, professors or practitioners in general scoff at alternative medicine • You know many of yourself are that such person • And in most cases – without a fair trial • Being such that the world of developed medicine has a separation of path – in which “conventional medicine is isolating itself from sources of interaction, feedback and advancements

  3. ConsequencesSo WHAT?! • ASSUMING alternative medicine is SHITE • Too little is known about it – can’t explain its inefficacy • There is only so many times you can tell your patients its shite before he thinks you are just full of it • That same lack of attention also enables it to achieve the status of a problem that “doesn’t exist” • You can’t fight something that technically does not exist

  4. Most importantly • You have lost the most important learning method – the specificity of the equation that will make medicine • The definition of the anything is most wholesome; when you can define it by what it is not rather than just what it is • In application – patients will desert you in the failure of conventional medicine; to SPURIOUS practices because you cannot form a recommendation on harmless alternative medicine

  5. Because lets face it Alternative medicine – Within the many that don’t work, are the many laid waste not due to justified junking but of biased generalisation

  6. The only thing stupider than a stubborn doctor who accepts everything at face value; is one who will kill his patient in future, • Just because he did not take the time to find out how alternative medicine is going to react with the scope of “conventional” therapy he is practicing. • Just because he is irresponsible to understand medicine of any kind has not achieved perfection and most probably never will. • To be confident of anything nowhere close to perfection, rejecting all other learning – that is narrow minded folly which will prove most costly • There will come a time when you just can’t keep saying you did your best – nothing else could be done • Especially when you have not fully explored all alternatives

  7. Symptoms • There are very commonlaymen errors committed by experienced professionals of the field • It is surprising how in fact their adaptation to 1 specific mindset without challenge, makes them more susceptible • Surprisingly, mainly because they supportother “professional” without question, or utilizing the logical basis of judgement

  8. 3 signs of trouble • They have not tried it, nor invest any real skepticism to learn • They have not done their research • More than hearsay • More than “credible” research and statistics • They can’t define it • They don’t even knowwhat they are denying • Common excuse: don’t need to know • Just want to pass the world’s expectation

  9. 3 failures of a student In the applied context simpler to us • You do not relate personally to the exam question • It is still a foreign concept that you cannot twist and churn out logic • You have not read enough to even know about it and what its not • You do not even know that problem exist • Don’t even know what to answer

  10. FAIL

  11. PathologySo why?

  12. Insecurity of not knowing everything • Common human nature in the rise of social status – fearing the unknown • Very common among senior in the field to resort to • It is defined – such because the books said so – no other reason • The main basis of doctors who are not actually researchers • Even now, we learn by learning outcomes

  13. Actual reason to hateconmen • So often we hear of so – called Chinese medicine menprescribing some Chinese medicine – actually nothing more than glucocorticoids (steroids) • Recently some claims of Indonesian man doing a Chi blast to topple their opponent • As said by ippatalang – how people with AIDS don’t getproper treatment because they rely on some form of alternative medicine

  14. But does these cheats represent the real doctors? • Who exactly are we directing our hate? • The reason whyso many conmen and cheats survive is actually for the way we sweep things under the carpet • The fact that we don’t acknowledge the possibility of alternative medicine, understandhow it works or how conmen uses it to cheat – is precisely the reason our patientsleave us to exploreuncertain realms • Almost like aids and botswanian government not acknowledging homosexuality, thus can’t treat a problem that does not exist

  15. Commercial purposes • Drug companies losesmoney • The one I know about is after talking to an American salesman recently • He was telling me of this simple instrument called the spinal stretch • But doctors don’t endorse it because money is not there – surgery • Acknowledging any other source of medicine is sometimes equivalent to losingcustomers • Lets face it – the days nowadays are such that education and healthcare is nothing more than a business venture

  16. Intent of acting smartbeyondone’s boundaries • Just the many more times, when impatient people findsenough suffering through medical school • The many times they forget, how they took for granted the source, of all knowledge they earned • The concept of being a doctor does not give you claims to researched rights • The understanding of one field of PHD does not grant you the knowledge of another • It is as simple as that and people should just realize that

  17. Xenophobia and culture intolerance • These will reveal your significant understanding • Chinese eats dogs (go ahead and ask any of our Chinese friends here) • You “researched” family guarded TCM treatments using a western internet information source explained in English and think you have researched TCM • You credit the scientific source of the majority as a justification of not giving the minority a chance • You attempt to separatewholistic treatments of TCM with the symptomatic separation mindset of a western surgeon • You speak of other medicine not by their name but by the generalisation of “alternative” medicine to your own • Whereby you have stated a preferential bias, vested interest and inability to judge objectively

  18. Onto an example: • In the past, there was this unlicensed physician who proposed an alternative treatment • Basically dog’s saliva would be used to treat a delirious child who was beginning to act very violently • The villagers all regarded him a quack and somewhat eccentric in his behaviour long before this • What should we do?

  19. The case • The child was Joseph Meister • The disease is Rabies – a viral disease which induces encephalitis in warm – blooded animals • The method of inoculation with dog’s saliva having been administered into a rabbit’s spine is called vaccination today • The person came to be known as the father of Germ theory – Louise Pasteur

  20. So my friends? What is alternative other than what is not acknowledged by the majority? Now ask, how many of the majority are actually fit to even say what is right about something? This is not a democratic election, you don’t go about defining nature’s law at the whims of a majority of people who have not made themselves understanding of how the world works.

  21. Another case • A heretic was up against the most influential body in the world of those days • He was sentenced to death by consumming poison • His idea was that the Earth revolved around the sun and not the other way around • His name was Galileo • The influential body was the Church

  22. Ignorant people will now say “but oh the church never had a hand in science. It is bullshit. We all know that” Only too often people are such so fickle, just as common as we see people flock from Shumacher to that of Alonso The church and its missionaries were one of the many reasons China integrated many western learning – one such man was Italian Christian missionary – Matteo Ricci Islam was the source of preservation of science during the dark ages of Europe

  23. The only common ground between all these enlightened nations – were that they embraced and integrated different cultures. People praised the Japanese for one very well known trait – its name is Copycat. They took whatever they could and just beat anyone else at the same game

  24. Much less can be said about the situation here where in the UK itself – there is a widespread condemnation of TCM practices Even whilst practices as acupuncture and chiropractor practisesare being adapted (separately from the holistic treatment it is suppose to come with) This constant rebutting of the source without regard of the fruit they are taking is very contradictory Few knows even now the claims of how in Germany there is a pharmacopedia of herbal medicine of Traditional China (only spoken from the sides of China)

  25. It is only all too easy for us to look back and laugh at how stupid the Church might have been to dispute the center of the solar system How sure are we one day that school children may not look back and laugh at our folly for being so hard headed against learning? Even in the Medical School of Edinburgh is a recording of the misnomer fallen stomach and floating kidney diagnosis that persist until today - A result of comparing the vertical body against the understanding of anatomy from a horizontal table

  26. The last case • Those who know this case – Please SHUT UP ;D • Space being the final frontier, astronauts were excited to write their findings. They found that without gravity however – ink will not flow • What will you do?

  27. Supposedly America made a billion dollar anti – gravity pen • The crafty Russians introduced the pencil … • Did that sound logical to you? • If not glad you have physics background • Pencil lead flying around is not the safest thing • Pencil lead are flammable • Under a lack of atmospheric pressure – combustion is easier

  28. Moral • The most logical thing is not always the right answer • You are not hotter for climbing up mountains even if it brings you closer to the sun • Oh and for a certain someone ;D you do not die from taking poison as separate constituent of an actual herb as a pack • Western example: Beta blockers and alcohol inducing nausea • Yes alcohol is actually a medicine

  29. I was told to address 3 aspect of Chinese medicine • Acupuncture • Herbal medicine • Feng shui (humm … I’ll do so obligingly) • Yes there are far more than these

  30. Disclaimer • I am a proponent of truth. No more than what I claim here is what I know and accept for a personal belief • I am not an expert in Chinese medicine much less a qualified doctor other than to state what I agree with as a laymen

  31. Cognitive reasoning of research to avoid • Mindset • Indian dance is actually just Indian form of hip hop • Common heritage • Energy is Western Energy, so its not Qi; Gunpowder was founded in China, so Colts are Chinese inventions; Yoga is Indian, so meditation is not of the worlds • Invalid connotation • Ihave a friend who refused conventional treatment for alternative medicine and died • Did he die of alternative medicine or the inability of any more treatment? • Did he reject alternative medicine by personal choice or asked to? • Does a quack even represent the art in the first place? • Exaggerated requirements of proof • If it can’t totally reverse cancer means it is bullshit • Invested opinion • Chinese medicine has to be such and such, if it does not provide something special I did not know – its not TCM • An expectation that is already set before trying out new things

  32. Understanding the mindset of the medicine (TCM) • Holistic vs separate • Causal vs symptomatic • Inductive vs pathologic understanding • Functional vs organ • Body reinforcing vs significant changes • Protosciencevs evidence based (mostly statistics) • Definition of disease state • Alternative medicine usually addresses before a disease manifest visible symptoms • In the land of the blind, the 1 – eyed man reigns as king

  33. Herbal medicine • Nothing much I can say • Just remember with regard to above – it is meant to come as a whole • Case studies have revealed that every Chinese herb in separate constituents are poison – but they have never been taken separately • Everybody is regarded individually, there is no 1 same kind of headache as in western pharmacies • There is a common saying – attack poison with poison, don’t agree? • Then why chemotherapy?

  34. How it came about • For future research • Students of Chinese medicine learn the Tang Tou Jing • Reciting its every laws until they reach their masters in their 6 – 9th years of studies • The Li Shizenpharmacopedia • A collected research by students of their master’s reaction after taking drugs • Shennong was most known for taking the DuanChang Chao

  35. Accupuncture • Did I head Placebos in your head? • Psychosomatic disorders – bei gong she ying • First of all – yes Chinese medicine do not deny placebo as integral in their treatment • Its holistic remember? jing, qi, shen (weirdly enough also means god) • If however you still cannot overcome your bias • Just know they also perform equine acupuncture • So much for placebos in horses huh?

  36. Did I hear meridians are bullshit? • Martial artists still uses them • Did you even know at different times of days and seasons – your blood gathers at different organs more? • And yes, there is a thing called thermal x – rays that are being used to detect diseased meridians. • Research has apparently proven the relation as far as to the inactivity of certain corresponding points on the leg when the lungs are weak

  37. Its actual concept • Innervation • Action potential – electric potential • Innervation • In proper points • Relief • Excitation and usage of certain organs and somatic body

  38. Feng Shui • Actually the most important concept • I have tried to understand it completely enough to present it =) but I’m not good enough • I can however present the core principles of yin yang and 5 phase suitably if you wish • The 8 immortal concept is an interesting diagram expressing 256 in a binary code • Its significance seen even by Einstein • A lot of Chinese concept was first memorised – think of it like mnemonic rather than too seriously • Chinese always believe wholistic and perhaps this is most symbolic • In fact I would like to explain further on induction in this case

  39. Palmistry • The concept is the lifeline changes according to decisions and situations • The concept in mathematics is there is always a situation of very high possibility compared to the rest • The recognition of which is called pre – cognition • By inductive methods and repeated trials, we can find a common link between certain lines (with consideration of factors) and certain fates • Don’t agree? Well that is the most common trial for advancement in western medicine – DRUGS

  40. Basic concept • Dao give rise to Yin Yang – duality • Yin Yang we know best, it is connoted in Asia in simple diseases as “heatiness” and “too cooling”, also damp and dry which relates to complexion states – I’m not capable to explain • The main emphasis I would give however is the 5 phase diagram below

  41. Simple fun • Explanation of 5 phase flow and western disease correlation on my word document

  42. Don’t forget holistic thinking • Any case can suddenly appear as an appearance of 2 system – such as purple = red + blue

  43. Language difference • Good bye • Qi • Liver (gan) - dry

  44. When you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to seriously considerMark twain
