  4. English Grade 9 Required Courses Every 9th grade student must choose one of the following courses: -9th English -9th College Prep English -9th Grade Honors English (must have recommendation from 8th grade English teacher, and should have an 85% average in 8th Grade English)

English Grade 10 Every 10th grade student must choose one of the following courses, provided they passed 9th grade English: -10th English -10th College Prep English -10th Grade Honors English (must have recommendation from 9th grade English teacher, and should have maintained a 85% or higher in 9th grade Honors English or 90% if coming from College Prep English)

English Grade 11 Every 11th grade student must choose one of the following courses, provided they passed 10th grade English: -11th English -11th College Prep English -11th Grade Honors English (must have recommendation from 10th grade English teacher, and should have maintained a 85% or higher in 10th grade Honors English or 90% if coming from College Prep English)

English Grade 12 Every 12th grade student must choose one of the following courses, provided they passed 11th grade English: -12th English -12th College Prep English -12th Grade Honors English (must have recommendation from 11th grade English teacher, and should have maintained a 85% or higher in 11th grade Honors English or 90% if coming from College Prep English) Students may alsosubstitute 20th Century American Literature in place of a 12th grade English Course.

  8. English Electives There are plenty of English electives students can choose from as they schedule their upcoming classes. Use the following chart to determine at what grade is the earliest a student can select an elective. Note: Electives do not replace required English courses, with the exception of 20th Century Literature as noted on the Senior English slide.

Social Studies Grade 9 • All 9th grade students must take either World Cultures, AP World History, or AP Human Geography. • AP World History, and AP Human Geography are courses designed to prepare students for the AP exams which, if performed well enough, can earn college credits. This means that the course is very challenging and requires an intense individual work ethic and dedication.

Social Studies Grade 10 • All 10th grade students must take either American Government or AP Government and Politics. • AP Government and Politics is a course designed to prepare students for the AP Government and Politics exam which, if performed well enough, can earn college credits. This means that the course is very challenging and requires an intense individual work ethic and dedication. • 10th grade is the first year students are permitted to take Social Studies Electives. These include Psychology, Sociology/MultiCultural History, Economics, Western Civilization, and their related AP Courses. Taking these does not replace the Government course required for graduation.

Social Studies Grade 11 • All 11th grade students must take either US History II or AP US History. • AP US History is a course designed to prepare students for the AP US History exam which, if performed well enough, can earn college credits. Social Studies Grade 12 • By 12th grade, all students should have completed their required 3 Social Studies required courses for graduation. • In their 12 grade year, students are strongly encouraged to take a social studies elective, especially if they are planning on college. These courses include Psychology, Sociology/MultiCultural History, Economics, Western Civilization, and their related AP Courses. Completion of any of these courses earns elective credits towards graduation.

Science Grade 9 • 9th grade science - 1 credit • Introductory science course including topics in physics, chemistry, and ecology • Honors Biology -- 1 credit/weighted at 1.04 - Keystone Exam Course (exam taken in May) • Honors biology can be taken by incoming 9th grade students who have demonstrated excellent skills in science and have received teacher recommendation and a math requirement. • This course is a lab based science course studying the living world and includes a few advanced biological topics.

Science Grade 10 • Biology 1 - 1.0 credits - Keystone Exam Course (exam taken in May) • This is the 10th grade science course taken after 9th grade science • Laboratory and experience based science course • Topics include biological principles from the microscopic to macroscopic world • Honors Chemistry (1 credit - weighted at 1.04) OR Chemistry (1 credit) • This course is available to students who took Honors Biology • Course includes a basic understanding of chemical principles and teaches both theoretical concepts and problem solving skills. • Strong math skills are recommended for this course. The course description states that Algebra II must have been previously completed or must be taken concurrently with this course. If you are not strong in math, you might want to consider waiting to take chemistry until after you complete the Algebra II course.

Science Grade 11 & 12 - Biological Electives • Biology 2 - 1 credit - weighted at 1.04 • Prerequisites: Biology & Chemistry (or chemistry concurrently) • Survey course that explores the diversity of life and follows the 6 kingdom system from microscopic bacteria to the animal kingdom. • The course includes a large amount of lab work, including microscopy and dissections. • Anatomy and Physiology - 1 credit - weighted at 1.04 • Prerequisites: Biology & Chemistry (or chemistry concurrently) • This course will cover the systems of the human body and include labs and dissections • AP Biology - 2 credits - 1.08 weight • double period course that meets daily • Prerequisites: Biology & Chemistry • A rigorous course that is similar to an introductory biology course taken during the first year of college. • The course is structured around the 4 Big Ideas of Biology – Evolution & Diversity of Life, Cellular Processes, Biological Interactions, and Genetics & Information Transfer. • Students are encouraged to take the AP Biology exam in May toward college credit

  18. Science Grade 11 & 12 - Chemistry Electives • Chemistry (1 credit) (same as above) • Prerequisites: Biology I or Honors Biology • Course includes a basic understanding of chemical principles and teaches both theoretical concepts and problem solving skills. • Strong math skills are recommended for this course. The course description states that Algebra II must have been previously completed or must be taken concurrently with this course. • Organic Chemistry 1 credit - weighted at 1.04 • Prerequisites: Chemistry • Course provides a study of carbon based chemistry • AP Chemistry - 2 credits - 1.08 weight • Prerequisites: Chemistry & Algebra II • This is a challenging course similar to the first two college chemistry courses • Students can expect to improve problem solving skills, collaborative working skills, scientific literacy and communication skills, and time management. • The content is very math heavy. • Students will have the opportunity to earn college credit by taking the AP exam in May.

Science Grade 11 & 12 - Physics Electives • Physics 1 credit - weighted at 1.04 • Prerequisites: Algebra II • Required in college for just about every science, engineering, or medical related career. • Gives students prior exposure and a foundation to understanding topics of the physical world that may be needed for college, as well as a full transcript including a variety of sciences (biology, chemistry, physics) • Provides many opportunities to do fun and interesting "hands on" labs and activities. • AP Physics I & II 2 credits - 1.08 weight • Prerequisites: Physics & Algebra II • These are 2 courses to explore in depth physics concepts and provide a college level physics experience. • It is the equivalent of a non-calculus introductory science course for science and pre-med majors • AP Physics I and AP Physics II are offered alternate years • Students will be able to sit for the AP exam in the spring.

Science Grade 11 & 12 - Earth & Environmental Electives • Earth Systems 1 credit • This course studies the Earth, its atmosphere and weather, as well as the universe providing students a better understanding of the processes of the Earth and practical applications • Human Influence on the Environment 1 credit • This course is a hands on higher level science class students can take as juniors or seniors. This course investigates the natural processes of the Earth and how humans impact those processes. • AP Environmental Science 2 credits - 1.08 weight • Prerequisites: Biology, Chemistry, & Algebra • This AP course can be taken by students as juniors or seniors who have completed Biology and Chemistry with a B or higher. • Students will investigate the natural processes of the Earth and the functions that cause them. • Students will be able to sit for the AP exam in the spring.

  26. Physical Education and Health 11th and 12th New Course: Fire & Emergency Medical Responder Training Program • This is a certification program taught by a HACC instructor. • Students will be required to become members of their local fire department.

World Language Grades 9-12 • May choose French, German, Latin, or Spanish • Many colleges want at least two years of language on your transcript • Pass to the next level by teacher recommendation (at least a 75% average recommended) • The 4 year sequence of all languages is Level 1 - Level 2 - Level 3 - AP • It is possible to take two languages at once if you have the space in your schedule.   36. Family Consumer Science Grade 10-12 Child Development Understanding the role of being a parent or caregiver is the first component of this course. The second component is learning about children from birth to age five. This course is appropriate for students that want to go into child care careers, elementary education, or a medical career.   38. Family Consumer Science Grade 12 Foods and Nutrition Teamwork is a key component to this course. Students work in groups of 4-5 to accomplish various food related tasks in our kitchens. Students taking this course should be prepared to read and follow directions, use real life math skills and critically evaluate food products. And yes, cook and eat!   39. Art Education Grade 9-12 VISUAL JOURNALING Open to all grades 9-12 What is it? In this exciting course, students will explore the use of a journal in diverse ways that combine both writing AND visual information to solve a variety of complex creative problems that challenge you and the connection to your place in the world. “Journal”- A tool that holds the documentation and collections of the journey taken in the creative thought process EXPLORATIONS IN ART (INTRO TO ART) Open to all grades 9-12 What is it? Students will gain self-awareness and growth through the use of art as a visual language. Students will use creative thought and problem solving while involved in varied mini art explorations that will culminate in a final “artist book” portfolio.

Taking this class will improve your creativity and problem solving abilities. It does not matter how skilled you are it matters how hard you try to improve yourself. Three Dimensional Art I 1 credit Open to grades 10-12 This class is for any student interested in learning about sculpture and pottery materials, and techniques. Taking this class will improve your creativity and problem solving abilities while working with your hands. You will get your hands dirty. It does not matter how skilled you are it matters how hard you try to improve yourself.

  41. Art Education Grade 11 Photography I 1 credit Open to grades 11-12 Prerequisite: Students must have completed Drawing and Painting I. This is an introductory course focusing on the principles and techniques of camera use, film development, printing, and presentation. Investigation of visual criteria is stressed as an intergral part of the photoghapic process. A 35mm camera is required. (Automatic or SLR is acceptable) This course is available to juniors and Seniors only.

  44. Art Education Grade 12 Three Dimensional Art III 1 credit or 2 credits Open to grade 12 Prerequisite: Three Dimensional Art II. The focus of this course is the creative process with an individualized concentration opportunity. Creative growth and problem solving will be encouraged in the development of ideas and projects. Students will apply their knowledge to new concepts and materials and be encouraged to take risks to work beyond previous levels of success. Drawing and Painting III, Advanced portfolio development, (second year students) 1 credit or 2 credits Open to grade 12 Prerequisite” Drawing and Painting II. This course encourages creative growth and discourages dependence on preconceived ideas. Students will apply their knowledge to new concepts and materials and be encouraged to take risks to work beyond previous levels of success. The development of a portfolio is required.

  45. Art Education Grade 12 Advanced Creative Studies 2 credits Open to grade 12 only The focus of this course is the creative process. Visual art, music, writing, drama, dance and video production will be included in the curriculum. Projects and class activities will encompass all disciplines, with an individualized concentration opportunity. This course is for students interested in developing an awareness of the relationship of the creative process to society, culture and self, as well as for those desiring a career in the fine arts. Required activities could sometimes extend beyond the school day. Interested students should make arrangements through the Art department.
