AMPATH: International XP for the R&E Community • Started in March 2000 as a project led by Florida International University (FIU), in collaboration with Global Crossing (GX), to interconnect the Research and Education Networks in South and Central America, the Caribbean and Mexico to the global community of Research and Education networks • With generous donations from industrial partners • 10 DS3s from Global Crossing • GSR 12012 router from Cisco Systems • CBX 500 Carrier Class ATM switch from Lucent • M10 router from Juniper Networks • Collocation in the NAP of the Americas • Partial funding from the National Science Foundation’s Advanced Networking Infrastructure & Research (ANIR) Division • Project management and operational support from FIU

AMPATH IXP Services • High-speed peering point for regional and international Research and Education networks • Connectivity to Abilene • Available collocation facilities in the NAP of the Americas, in in Miami • Smart-Hands 24x7x365 services at the NAP • NOC Services from the Indiana Global Research NOC • Cross-connects through the Meet-Me Room or NAP Gigabit Ethernet fabric • Policy-free ATM PVCs and 802.1q VLANs for bilateral peering • Native IPv6, Multicast, VRVS services • Flow-based and QoS-based monitoring using netflow tools

Strategic Resources • Miami is the hub to 9 Major submarine fiber cable routes • Americas 1&2 • Global Crossing • Columbus II & III • Telefonica Emergia/SAM 1 • Arcos 1 • Maya 1 • 360 Americas • Miami is ranked 8th in the top 50 Inter-Regional Internet hub cities • Miami is ranked 1st in the top 10 International Internet Hub cities for Latin America and the Caribbean Source: Packet Geography, 2002

Upgrades and New Services • Abilene connection upgrade from OC3c to OC12c will be ready for service by end of December • Commodity Internet (IP Transit) is a new and ready for service estimated by January 2003 • Connection to STAR TAP/StarLight being reconfigured to support bilateral peering with US FedNets

Announcements • Gemini-South observatory connected • Venezuela is joining the AMPATH community • Awarded Strategic Technologies for the Internet grant from the National Science Foundation, award #0231844 • Participating in The Quilt as an Affiliate member • Valdevia workshop report is now available on the AMPATH web site at http://ampath.fiu.edu/Valdivia_Report.pdf The Valdevia Workshop was funded by NSF ANIR, award #0220176

The Valdevia Workshop Report TEN RECOMMENDATIONS • Increase AMPATH Staffing • Implement an Awareness Program • Develop a Comprehensive Funding Plan • Create an “NGIX South” in Miami • Create Alternative Access Points within AMPATH • Continue to Develop Long and Short Term Planning • Help Solve the National Infrastructure Problems • Revise the AMPATH Mission Statement • Create an AMPATH Acceptable Use Policy • Diversify AMPATH to support Production, Research and Experimental Networks Special thanks to NASA’s Bob Bradford and the Valdevia Group

  12. Performance Statistics • AMPATH traffic has doubled in one year • Upgrade to OC12c addresses recommendation from the Valdevia Group • On a typical day, 29,797 unique IP addresses sourced from these networks transited the AMPATH international exchange point.
