  1. The Fig Tree Matthew 24:32-41

  2. Introduction • The parable of the fig tree • It is a continuation of the preceding narrative

  3. Biblical Points • 34 "Truly I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place. • V.34 – generation – better translation is "race" (Peshitta reference); Jesus said the Hebrew people would survive

  4. 37 "For the coming of the Son of Man will be just like the days of Noah.38 "For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark,39 and they did not understand until the flood came and took them all away; so will the coming of the Son of Man be. V37- 39 – Noah reference; his warning and Jesus' warning

  5. Linguistic Echo • Micah 4:1-7 (fig tree) – “Each of them will sit under his vine and under his fig tree” • Jesus used the fig tree; therefore Jesus' words in this narrative are interpreted as apocalyptic

  6. Culture • Fig tree (calendar)

  7. "Even heaven and earth will pass away but my words will not pass away" • Aramaic figure of speech • Means "What I say must come true" • A prophet's reputation was in his words

  8. 40 "Then there will be two men in the field; one will be taken and one will be left.41 "Two women will be grinding at the mill; one will be taken and one will be left. • People worked in pairs • When people were captured for slavery, the young were taken

  9. For Us Today • Repent for the Kingdom of Heaven is near • When? No idea, therefore, we must always be ready • Jesus' words and instructions are truth • Follow Jesus' way because it prepares us for Heaven
