  1. Guilt by association Mark 6:1-6

  2. Introduction • Jesus has returned to Nazareth • Jesus went to the synagogue and was teaching

  3. Biblical Points • Teaching in the synagogue • Jesus was a carpenter – “tekton” can mean wood carpenter or stone mason. Aramaic word is “nagarah” which only means carpenter. (Peshitta)

  4. Culture • The occupation of a carpenter • Low-end job – little education and apprenticeship • Mainly fixed doors, make wooden keys and made wooden spoons • Farmers could fix their own wooden equipment • Not honoring prophets – why?

  5. MORE CULTURAL POINTS • Church tradition says they did not want the message, but that is a Greek interpretation • Assyrian culture in the Galilee • Jealousy and envy among people in the same town • Jealousy and envy among family members • Occupation often determined by what one’s father did

  6. For Us Today • Guilt by association – Jesus wanted to change this • Have you been “judged” because of family or friends? • Do you judge people because of family or friends? • How about judging people because of where they live or lived? • Jesus is Mark tried to create a new sociological structure – your family of origin or land you lived or social position or wealth - DOES NOT MATTER.
