  3. Culture about religious leaders • “Son of Man” in Aramaic meant an ordinary person with no credentials • Why Elijah? Preparing the way for the Messiah • Pharisees believed the Messiah could not come until the streets of Jerusalem were cleansed of Romans because they were pagans • Who am I?

  4. Rock – trust that is so firm that it cannot be changed or altered; truth; support • Sheol – just below the surface of the Earth; the LORD had no influence there • Keys – the symbol of power and trust • Bind and Loose – “to enact new laws and repeal others,” “forgive or not forgive sin” Metaphors and Phrases

  5. Rock of the church • Church interpretation – Peter is the foundation and all Popes must have an apostolic succession to Peter • Original Meaning - derived from the Koine Greek, the truth of Jesus as the Messiah is the support and foundation of the Kingdom of Heaven

  6. For us Today • Jesus as the Messiah is the truth and foundation of the church • Jesus expects us to grow the Kingdom of Heaven. • Even Sheol would come under the Kingdom of Heaven View of the Kingdom
