  1. How Strong is your Faith? Matthew 9:18-34

  2. Introduction • Matthew’s author likes triads • Official officer’s daughter (with an inside story of woman bleeding) • Two blind men • Demon possessed men

  3. Mourning Culture • Overwhelming grief • Being silent meant you had no positive feelings for the deceased • Slapped their faces • Tore their clothing • Inflected wounds

  4. “The girl is not dead” was a Semitic expression used to calm down parents • Women cut their hair and beat themselves on their breasts • Men did not shave • Professional singers and wailers

  5. For us today • All four stories center on faith • Jesus was more concerned about one’s soul than body • Nefesh, Neshamah, Ruach

  6. Habits to avoid that can ruin faith • Worrying – James 1:6-8 • Being cynical – Hebrews 11:1 • Avoiding the Bible – Romans 10:17 • Trusting only in your feelings rather than God • Being self-reliant – Jeremiah 17:5-8

  7. Worrying – James 1:6-8 6 But he must ask in faith without any doubting, for the one who doubts is like the surf of the sea, driven and tossed by the wind.7 For that man ought not to expect that he will receive anything from the Lord, 8being a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways. (Jas. 1:6-8 NAU)

  8. Being cynical – Hebrews 11:1 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. (Heb. 11:1 NAU)

  9. Avoiding the Bible – Romans 10:17 17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ. (Rom. 10:17 NAU)

  10. Trusting only in your feelings rather than God • Connected to worrying

  11. Being self-reliant – Jeremiah 17:5-8 5 Thus says the LORD, "Cursed is the man who trusts in mankind And makes flesh his strength, And whose heart turns away from the LORD. 6 "For he will be like a bush in the desert And will not see when prosperity comes, But will live in stony wastes in the wilderness, A land of salt without inhabitant. 7 "Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD And whose trust is the LORD. (Jer. 17:5-7 NAU)

  12. Satan tries constantly to destroy your faith • Solution: stay close to Jesus
