  1. Who is Jesus? Matthew 22:35-46

  2. Introduction • V. 34 – 40: The two Great Commandments • V. 41 – 46: Who are you?

  3. Two Great Commandments • Love God • Love Neighbor

  4. Who are you? • Based on Psalm 110:1 • HebrewGreekLatinEnglish

  5. English Psalm 110:1 • NAU Psalm 110:1 A Psalm of David. The LORD says to my Lord: "Sit at My right hand Until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet." (Ps. 110:1 NAU)

  6. Hebrew Psalm 110:1 God’s Name from the Burning Bush My Lord = My King

  7. Greek (Septuagint) • BGT Psalm 109:1 τῷ Δαυιδ ψαλμός εἶπεν ὁ κύριος τῷ κυρίῳ μου κάθου ἐκ δεξιῶν μου ἕως ἂν θῶ τοὺς ἐχθρούς σου ὑποπόδιον τῶν ποδῶν σου (Ps. 109:1 BGT) Lord – dative singular masculine Lord – nominative singular masculine

  8. Why did the Septuagint translators use the same word for God’s name and Lord? • Koine Greek did not have a word for the name of God so it used the “substitute word: Lord” • The name of God is heard spoken • Instead the word Adonai is said • Adonai means “lord”

  9. Psalm 110:1 in the Targums • HebrewTargums • PST Psalm 110:1 Composed by David, a psalm. The LORD said in his decree to make me lord of all Israel, but he said to me, "Wait still for Saul of the tribe of Benjamin to die, for one reign must not encroach on another; and afterwards I will make your enemies a prop for your feet."

  10. Psalm 110:1 in the Targums • ANOTHER TARGUM: The LORD said in his decree to appoint me ruler over Israel, but the LORD said to me, "Wait for Saul of the tribe of Benjamin to pass away from the world; and afterwards you will inherit the kingship, and I will make your enemies a prop for your feet."

  11. What does Psalm 110:1 mean? • What Jesus said is that God will reveal the Messiah when God was ready to do it

  12. For us today – Part 1 • Hardest question I ever asked: Who is this Jesus and how can he save me from sins? • Can you answer the question? • Simple response “He is the savior” is not good enough • Just because the NT says so is not sufficient for non-believers • Each of us needs to be able to answer this question!

  13. For us today – Part 2 • Do you let guide you through life? • Do you ask for guidance through the Holy Spirit? • Do you make decisions without consulting God? • Have you been following the macro plan God has for you? • Have you ever asked God for His macro plan for you?
