    1. The GOOD shepherd John 10:11-18

    2. Introduction • Part of the good shepherd passage • Jesus with sheep found in ….. • We like this image

    3. Echo • Echo of King David • David was a young boy. Was a shepherd. 34 But David said to Saul, "Your servant was tending his father's sheep. When a lion or a bear came and took a lamb from the flock,35 I went out after him and attacked him, and rescued it from his mouth; and when he rose up against me, I seized him by his beard and struck him and killed him. (1 Sam. 17:34-35 NAU)

    4. Echo continued • David as King – protector of the people • Jesus came from humble roots like David • Jesus replaces David as the King of Israel

    5. Culture • 2 types of shepherd • Hired hands – run at the first sign of trouble • Owner of the flock – would die to protect the sheep • “Good shepherd” is the owner of the flock

    6. Culture continued • “Other sheep” is anyone who does not know about God’s love through the Messiah 1 But there will be no more gloom for her who was in anguish; in earlier times He treated the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali with contempt, but later on He shall make it glorious, by the way of the sea, on the other side of Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles. 2 The people who walk in darkness Will see a great light; Those who live in a dark land, The light will shine on them. (Isa. 9:1-2 NAU)

    7. Scripture points • Why is the Father mentioned in verse 15? • Jesus was willing to die for us (His sheep) • He knew that the Father would rescue him from death • Also, Jesus’ work was God supported

    8. Scripture points continued • Lay down my life to take it again in verse 17? • Jesus had to lose His human life regain his spiritual life • Answers the question of “was He really human?” • Possibly from Philippians 2 – Kenosis passage

    9. For us today • Following Jesus makes us metaphorically His sheep • Jesus will protect all who follow Him

    10. For us Today continued • What does it mean to follow Jesus • Follow Scripture • Easy way to find biblical passages – google • Answers to life’s question are in the Bible
