  1. ELICA Sofia University Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics Department of Information technologies www.elica.net elica@fmi.uni-sofia.bg

  2. Elica History • Decision to develop Elica – 2001 at the Bulgarian-USA forum on Math and CS Education • Grant Award for developing the first version of Elica. Grant provided by “Best Practices in Education” • The Elica project absorbs other smaller projects developed in the faculty, e.g. Geomland

  3. Characteristics • Development environment with a high-level programming language • Libraries for 3D graphics and animation in real time • Set of applications which can be used in Math and CS education • A tool for visualization and experimental model, processes and phenomena • Environment for educators and students to create their own educational software

  4. Elica Usage • Universities from North America, Latin America, Asia and Europe. • Stevens Institute of Technology (New Jersey) • New York University (New York) • Saturday Academy (Portland) • Using Elica in international projects • DALEST (co-funded by EU, program Socrates, MINERVA) • Educational use of Elica in Hungary and Bulgaria • Used as base course software • “Computer Graphics” Sofia University, Bulgaria • “Educational Environments”, Sofia University, Bulgaria • “Game developing”, Saturday Academy, USA

  5. Elica Applications - 1 Elica-based applications for truss analysis (used byStevens Institute of TechnologyandNew York University) Module for 3D visualization of truss constructions made by the students Module for truss design

  6. Elica Applications - 2 Reimplementation of existing educational software “Geomland” 3D animated model of steam machine implemented in Elica Model of a steam machine implemented in the original Geomland

  7. Elica Applications - 3 Mathematical modelling: • surfaces • intersections • 3D solids • Educational games • Interactive visualization of theorems

  8. Elica Applications - 4 Creating games, animations and virtual characters in order to practice skill in software development and participation in projects Elica models of 3D chess figures Animation of 3D models of humans and robots

  9. Elica Applications - 5 Virtual Thermodynamics Lab Module for experiments with light Virtual Optical Lab Interactive model of spectrophotometer

  10. Future Plans • Creation of multiplatform version of Elica which will work on Windows, LinuxandMacOS • Design and implementation of additional educational Elica-based software • Preparing teaching materials for using Elica in secondary and university levels • Drawing financial support in order to support the Elica team in creating new software and conduct research of modern technologies and their implementation in education
