  1. LATAH by: NoorAiniHayatibinti Abdullah NurShafiqaIzzatibintiRusli

  2. What is “latah”? A condition where the startle reflex is greatly exaggerated. The startle reflex in this order is characterized by jumping, raising the arms, yelling, hitting, obeying sudden commands and repeating sentences. latah

  3. Overview • Culture specific syndrome. • South-East Asia • French-Canadian lumberjacks in Maine (Jumping Frenchmen of Maine) • Ainu of Japan (imu) • Siberia (miryachit)

  4. Epidemiology • in the literature, no extensive empirical study of the disorder has yet been made. Therefore, our theories concerning latah remain mere hunches or at the best logically consistant but unverified guesses. • absence of detailed statistics. • found in Malaysia & Indonesia. • mostly women, aged > 40 years old.

  5. Etiology • controversial discussion • exact causes remain unknown. • triggered when the latah sufferer is provoked either verbally or through any kind of actions (eg: poking) • become worsen as they are slyly provoked over and over again.

  6. When? • drowsy • lost in thought • too focused in doing something • Onset: after period of anxious worry/ traumatic experience ( eg: loss of child)

  7. Types of Latah • 3 types. • Immediate Response Latah • strong responses to startling stimulus which others find amusing : violent body movement, striking out, throwing/ dropping held object, and sometimes “naughty talk”. • Attention Capture Latah • includes matching, the completion of other-initiated actions, and sometimes obedience.

  8. Role Latah • practice of selecting behaviors from both categories, and elaborating them idiosyncratically into intentionally amusing performance. • the stimulus is inadequate to trigger a startle response (eg: gentle nudge). An actual startle may not occur, although an acted version of one is usually performed. • this “silly” behaviors include teasing of others, considerable wit and satire. • sometimes, a person doing this begins with stimulation, but with the arousal, their performances engender, and after being repeatedly poked, show actual startles and the phenomena which follow them.

  9. Symptoms • severe startle reaction. • Eg : jumping, raising the arms, hitting, • yelling. • imitate the speech and behavior. • automatic obedience • coprolalia – involuntary utterance of • obscene words.

  10. Treatment • No specific treatment. • Reduce – stop teasing the • patient
