  2. Expressing love through submission

    1 Corinthians 16
  3. Distrust of authority is hard to reconcile with… 1 Thessalonians 5:12-1312 Now we ask you, brothers, to give recognition to those who labor among you and lead you in the Lord and admonish you, 13 and to regard them very highly in love because of their work. Be at peace among yourselves.
  4. Distrust of authority is hard to reconcile with… Heb. 13:17  Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they keep watch over your souls as those who will give an account, so thatthey can do this with joy and not with grief, for that would be unprofitable for you.
  5. 1st Area of Submission -- GIVING 1 Cor. 16:1-6 -- Now about the collection for the saints: You should do the same as I instructed the Galatian churches. 2 On the first day of the week, each of you is to set something aside and save in keeping with how he prospers, so that no collections will need to be made when I come. 3 When I arrive, I will send with letters those you recommend to carry your gracious gift to Jerusalem. 4 If it is suitable for me to go as well, they can travel with me. 5 I will come to you after I pass through Macedonia—for I will be traveling through Macedonia— 6 and perhaps I will remain with you or even spend the winter, so that you may send me on my way wherever I go.
  6. 1st Area of Submission -- GIVING 1 Cor.
  7. 1st Area of Submission -- GIVING 1 Cor.
  8. 1st Area of Submission -- GIVING 1 Cor.
  9. 1st Area of Submission -- GIVING 1 Cor. Gal. 2:9-10 -- 9 When James, Cephas, and John, recognized as pillars, acknowledged the grace that had been given to me, they gave the right hand of fellowship to me and Barnabas, agreeing that we should go to the Gentiles and they to the circumcised.  10 They asked only that we would remember the poor, which I made every effort to do.
  10. Giving Beyond Our Location?
  11. What about giving to support your own church leadership & budget? Paul refused to accept funds from the Corinthians for his work among them. See 1 Cor. 9 Paul did not hesitate to ask for them to give to work beyond them. 5 I will come to you after I pass through Macedonia—for I will be traveling through Macedonia— 6 and perhaps I will remain with you or even spend the winter, so that you may send me on my way wherever I go.
  12. What about giving to support your own church leadership & budget? Is Paul’s “tent-making” approach universally applicable? See 1 Cor. 9 1 Tim. 5:17-18 -- 17 The elders who are good leaders should be considered worthy of an ample honorarium, especially those who work hard at preaching and teaching. 18 For the Scripture says: Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain, and, the worker is worthy of his wages.
  13. Giving for NH’s Budget? NH Budget: Need /mo for budget: $28K Current Deficit YTD (thru March) vs. Budget: 1,371
  14. 1st Area of Submission -- GIVING 1 Cor.
  15. 1st Area of Submission -- GIVING 1 Cor. Offering money, many Christians believe, should be like Hollywood's version of romance: spontaneous, exuberant, and impulsive. Financial gifts should be joyful, we think, so we give only when the urge strikes.
  16. 1st Area of Submission -- GIVING 1 Cor. This attitude translates to giving from our wallets instead of our paychecks. When the offering plate comes by, we dig into our purses or pockets and freely, joyfully give of what we find. Meanwhile, nearly all of our income is spoken for.
  17. 1st Area of Submission -- GIVING 1 Cor. One congregant put it this way: "God requires it, but … he also tells us that he doesn't want us to give if we don't want to." The proof text for this attitude is: "Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver."
  18. 1st Area of Submission -- GIVING 1 Cor.
  19. 1st Area of Submission -- GIVING 1 Cor.
  20. 2 Cor. 8:11-15-- 11 But now finish the task as well, that just as there was eagerness to desire it, so there may also be a completion from what you have. 12 For if the eagerness is there, it is acceptable according to what one has, not according to what he does not have. 13 It is not that there may be relief for others and hardship for you, but it is a question of equality— 14 at the present time your surplus is available for their need, so their abundance may also become available for our need, so there may be equality. 15 As it has been written: The person who gathered much did not have too much, and the person who gathered little did not have too little.
  21. 1st Area of Submission -- GIVING 1 Cor. Comparative generosity ought to increase as we have more resources.

  24. Matt. 6:19-2019Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.

  26. 1st Area of Submission -- GIVING 2 Cor. 8:20-21-- 20 We are taking this precaution so no one can criticize us about this large sum administered by us. 21 For we are making provision for what is right, not only before the Lord but also before men. 1 Cor.
  27. 1st Area of Submission -- GIVING 2 Cor. 8:20-21-- 20 We are taking this precaution so no one can criticize us about this large sum administered by us. 21 For we are making provision for what is right, not only before the Lord but also before men. 1 Cor. But, they did not have control over how the gift was used once it was entrusted to the church in Jerusalem!
  28. 1st Area of Submission -- GIVING Do you give prayerfully or haphazardly? Do you give as a priority or as an afterthought? Giving 1st before you know what will be leftover Giving 1st & then adjusting your spending around that Do you live intentionally & consistently below your means? Not – “Can I afford this?”, but – “How will this impact my ability to advance the kingdom of God?” Do you give sacrificially or safely? Does your giving deeply impact your standard of living?
  29. 2nd Area of Submission -- LEADERSHIP 1 Cor. 16:10-12 -- 10 If Timothy comes, see that he has nothing to fear from you, because he is doing the Lord’s work, just as I am. 11 Therefore, no one should look down on him. Send him on his way in peace so he can come to me, for I am expecting him with the brothers. 12 About our brother Apollos: I strongly urged him to come to you with the brothers, but he was not at all willing to come now. However, he will come when he has an opportunity.
  30. 2nd Area of Submission -- LEADERSHIP 1 Cor. 1:12 -- Each of you says, “I’m with Paul,” or “I’m with Apollos,” or “I’m with Cephas,” or “I’m with Christ.” 1 Cor. 3:21-23 -- 21 So no one should boast in human leaders, for everything is yours—22 whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world or life or death or things present or things to come—everything is yours, 23 and you belong to Christ, and Christ belongs to God. They struggled to submit to Paul’s leadership because he suffered for the Gospel(2 Cor.) Acts 18:24 – Apollos…an eloquent man who was powerful in the use of the Scriptures
  31. 2nd Area of Submission -- LEADERSHIP 1 Cor. 16:10-12 -- 10 If Timothy comes, see that he has nothing to fear from you, because he is doing the Lord’s work, just as I am. 11 Therefore, no one should look down on him. 33. 2nd Area of Submission -- LEADERSHIP Philippians 2:19-22 -- 19 Now I hope in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you soon so that I also may be encouraged when I hear news about you. 20 For I have no one else like himwho will genuinely care about your interests; 21 all seek their own interests, not those of Jesus Christ. 22 But you know his proven character, because he has served with me in the gospel ministry like a son with a father.
  34. 2nd Area of Submission -- LEADERSHIP 1 Cor. 16:15-18 -- 15Brothers, you know the household of Stephanas: They are the firstfruits of Achaia and have devoted themselves to serving the saints. I urge you 16 also to submit to such people, and to everyone who works and labors with them. 17 I am pleased to have Stephanas, Fortunatus, and Achaicus present, because these men have made up for your absence. 18 For they have refreshed my spirit and yours. Therefore recognize such people.
