What is the Technology Strategy Board? • Guided by a business-led Governing Board • Sponsored by DIUS, working with all government departments …. • ….and Regional Development Agencies, Research Councils, Devolved Administrations and other innovation groups Partnership is key • Budget – £711m over 3 years; over £1bn with the RDAs (£180m) and the Research Councils (£120m) • Staff of around 75 people • Based in Swindon (with desks in London)

  3. Our vision for the future ‘for the UK to be a global leader in innovation and a magnet for innovative businesses, who can apply technology rapidly, sustainably and effectively to create wealth and enhance quality of life’

Criteria for Support • UK capacity to develop and exploit the technology Can the UK do it? • The size of the global market opportunity Is there a large market opportunity? • The right potential for impact in the right time frame Is the idea “ready” • A clear role for the TSB to add value Can we make a difference?

  5. Current Support • Collaborative R&D • Innovation Platforms • Knowledge Transfer Networks • Knowledge Transfer Partnerships • Micro Nanotechnology (MNT) Centres • Framework Programme National Contact Points and EUREKA

Collaborative R&D competitions • Key mechanism for supporting business R&D • Competition priorities derived from Key Technology / Application Areas / Innovation Platforms • Support Business to Business and Science to Business R&D projects that will deliver successful new products and services • Funding for Basic, Applied and Experimental Development R&D projects (75% - 25% contribution towards project costs) • Since 2004 more than 600 Collaborative R&D projects approved for funding – (£3k - £95m) – representing about £1 Bn of R&D activity

  9. Innovation Platforms • Designed to address major policy and societal challenges • Five current Innovation Platforms – Intelligent Transport Systems and Services – Network Security – Assisted Living – Low Impact Buildings – Low Carbon Vehicles • New Innovation Platforms under development….

Knowledge Transfer Networks • A single over-arching national network in a specific field of technology or business application • Help members to make new contacts • Organise events on topics relevant to their community • Offer help/advice with TSB and EU (and RC) funding • Provide free on-line conferencing and collaboration space • Have ability to influence government policy (indirectly) • Some provide small grants (SPARK awards of £5K, SWIFT) Join a KTN! http://ktn.globalwatchonline.com/

Knowledge Transfer Partnerships • Supported by TSB and 16 other Government Organisations • Enable companies to access capability and expertise in research base • Traditional KTP model - Research Associate works on a project (1-3 years) with the company • As a result of Sainsbury Review - aim to double the number, and introduce “mini-KTP” scheme
