Killer Whale Facts • The killer whale or Orcas is the largest member of the dolphin family. • The average male Orcas grows to 23 feet long and weighs 7 to 8 tons.The females average is 21 feet long and weighs 4 to 6 tons. • The population of killer whales is unknown. • The Orcas lifespan is 30 to 50 years in the wild. • Killer whales eat fish, squid, birds, and marine mammals.

Killer Whale Facts • Orcas travel in pods witch usually consist of 5 to 30 whales, although some may combine to form 100 or more. • Killer whale’s habitats are found in both costal waters and open oceans. • Orcas are found in all oceans, but most common in the Artic and Antarctic. • Pollution and chemical contamination make Orcas more susceptible to disease and likely cause reproductive difficulties. • Killer whales use echolocation like dolphins.

  4. Killer Whale Facts • An Orca’s calf will be born in the autumn. • An Orca’s gestation is 13 to 16 months. • The calf will remain with it’s mother for two years. • The calf or baby Orcas weighs almost 400 pounds and 7 feet in length when born. • Killer whales are highly social animals.

Killer Whale Facts • The pods are lead by the female Orcas. • Recent studies have found that Orcas are among the most contaminated marine mammals in the world. • The largest recorded killer whale measured 32 feet and weighed 22,000 lbs. • Orcas sit at the top of their food chain because they have no predators. • Killer whales are often called the wolves of the sea because they hunt in groups like packs of wolves.
