  2. There is Hope Ministries

  3. Mental illness Mental illness is not often spoken about in our society. Many times we find it very difficult to talk about mental illness in our congregations.

  4. There is a true need! There is a true and urgent need to talk about mental illness in our society and to continue with more discussions in our congregations.

  5. What is Mental illness? Mental illness is a disease of the brain. It is defined as a group of disorders causing severe disturbance in thinking, feeling and/or relating. The result is a diminished capacity for coping with the ordinary demands of Life.

  6. It is a Medical Condition! Mental illnesses are medical conditions that disrupt a person's thinking, feeling, mood, ability to relate to others, and daily functioning. Just as diabetes is a disorder of the pancreas, mental illnesses are medical conditions that result in a diminished capacity for coping with the ordinary demands of life.

  7. Mental illness Statistics Six percent, or 1 in 17 American adults live with a serious mental illness. One in four adults-approximately 57.7 million Americans-experience a mental health disorder in any given year. One in five families are impacted. Sources; National Alliance on Mental Illness, Arlington, VA Treatment Advocacy Center, Arlington, VA Alzheimer’s Association, Chicago, IL

  8. $ The Costs $ Without treatment the consequences of mental illness for the individual and society are staggering: unnecessary disability, unemployment, substance abuse, homelessness, inappropriate incarceration, suicide and wasted lives; The economic cost of untreated mental illness is more than $100billiondollars each year in the United States.

  9. Mental illness Mental illness. Two words that cause people to cast judgment or turn away. It is, perhaps, the ultimate example of a stigma. Society probably spends more time trying to ignore mental illness than to understand it.

  10. Families The crisis of mental illness is probably the most agonizing of all human experiences for everyone directly involved. Together with suicide, mental illness constitutes the deepest of the various forms of "deep water" through which individuals and families must sometimes go.

  11. Impact to Families Families are drained physically, psychologically, financially and spiritually. They experience feelings of frustration, fear, guilt, denial, loss, isolation, sadness and loss of hope.

  12. How Families React • How a family reacts to the onset of mental illness directly effects the family member’s recovery. • How a family reacts to the on going dilemma of mental illness effects not only the consumer of mental illness but the whole family.

  13. Role of the Faith Community • The faith community can be of tremendous help offering hope, unconditional love, and support to families who often find themselves stigmatized and isolated from the community. How we respond can make a significant difference in the family’s reaction to the crisis and as a result the family member’s recovery.

  14. Inter-denominational Ministry!

  15. Christ Centered “There is Hope” is a Christ-centered ministry founded on the belief that people who have Christian faith need a place where they can discuss their faith and their family’s mental health problems. In today’s culture—neither in secular groups nor in church groups—is it possible to freely and comfortably discuss these two topics together.
