  2. Section 1- Current Design • Section 2- Problem and Customer Needs • Section 3- Concepts and Comparison • Section 4- Final Design • Section 5- Materials and Cost • Section 6 Analysis Outline

  3. Current Design

  4. 33’x43’ room with 2 windows, 2 chalkboards (3’ high), and a projector screen • 96 permanent desks • 2 doors • Little personal space between desks (6”) • Desks offer little room, very uncomfortable • Also have small desk space-hard to work on (16”x12”) Current Features

  5. Customer Needs

  6. 1. Comfort • 1.1 Larger Desks • More physical space for occupants of larger stature • More desk area to write on • 1.2 Desk Spacing • More room to move between rows • 1.3 Room Layout • Traffic Flow • 1.4 Personal Space • Separate Desks by larger distance • 2. 7. 62 Willard is a medium sized classroom that currently seats 96. The arrangement of the chairs is cramped, uncomfortable and is prohibitive to the learning environment. From the back of the room it is difficult to see the chalkboard or hear the teacher. The desks offer little room for personal space and a person with above average stature will barely fit. It is difficult to see over taller students as well. The current layout also makes entrance and exit of the classroom a hassle, as the desk spacing prohibits ease of movement throughout the classroom. The aesthetics such as natural lighting and color scheme are also depressing Problem

  8. Concepts

  9. This design uses same features as original. Desks are rotated to face side Classroom is 10ft shorter in this direction Better Visibility Generated Concept 1

  10. This design has same layout as original. Instructor is on a riser for easier visibility Chalkboard and projector screen are raised as well Generated Concept 2

  11. This design has the same features as original Desks are staggered so row in front of you does not block view Same capacity as original Generated Concept 3

  12. This design incorporates an angled floor Improves visibility Has an aisle separating the classroom in half for better movement. Same capacity Generated Concept 4

  13. This design incorporates 3 tiers of desks Each 1.5ft higher than the next Better visibility than original design Has aisle for better movement Generated Concept 5

  14. Morphological Chart

  15. Criteria For Concept Selection: Has to be easy to enter/exit seats Must be easy to see and hear instructor Must have more room between desks Desks must be larger Final Design- Use 3 tiered concept Concept Selection

  25. Analysis

  26. The new design for 62 Willard is much more functional and aesthetically pleasing • It allows for better visibility, more personal space and enhanced traffic flow. • The prototype desks have more room and function • The cost is within reason for constructing a medium sized classroom. As expected, the structural support for the tiers was the major cost component, but this is the core of the new design.

  27. The new tiered design meets all customer needs from personal comfort at the desks to traffic flow and visibility. • It incorporates a modern design with new and improved desks • If built, new students will not mind coming to class at 62 Willard while enjoying an enhanced learning atmosphere.
