  2. Document Based Questions • Use historical documents, maps, charts, graphs and political cartoons. • They make an effort to make all students ask critical questions that lead to more critical questions.

  3. DBQ’s also….. • Blend critical thinking with writing into specific unit topics. • The 5 strands of the Social Studies arealso addressed within the assignments. • Each unit also asks an essential question that is central to the unit that thestudent will attempt to answer during the writing component.

  4. The Process…. • Starts with a “hooking” document. • The documents and assignments are geared to get students to formulate their own ideas as they hit the writing process. • The assignments are meant to be collaborative in nature and can easily be modified to fit student/teacher needs.

  5. Pre-bucketing • This process begins with brain storming the potential factors that could help explain the essential question.

  6. Early Jamestown: Why did so many colonies die? Relations w/ Indians Settler Skills Environmental Problems

  7. The Process…… • Students are encouraged to share their ideas about the documents throughout the whole process. There isn’t necessarily a wrong answer and opinions will vary. • After viewing the rest of the documents and takes notes/discussion students will do their buckets and chicken footing(road mapping).

  8. Colonists died in Jamestown for three main reasons.
