The ASF has been integral in supporting MEaSUREs projects related to global wetland monitoring and rapid ice dynamics in Greenland and Antarctica. Projects led by principal investigators such as Kyle McDonald and Ian Joughin involve PALSAR data acquisition planning and processing for multiple seasons, ensuring accurate mapping. ASF continues to serve as a distribution center for derived products, with a focus on facilitating scientific understanding of wetland extents, ice flow changes, and sea ice dynamics. Challenges in data center designation and impacts on project progression are acknowledged.

ASF SAR Data Center Support for MEaSUREs Projects Vicky Wolf ASF User Support Supervisor
MEaSUREs Projects Supported by ASF An Inundated Wetlands Earth System Data Record: Global Monitoring of Wetland Extent and Dynamics PI: Kyle McDonald • Provided PALSAR acquisition planning support • Requested by the project that ASF SDC be the distribution center for products, NASA has not decided which data center will distribute the products Greenland Ice Mapping Project: Measuring rapid changes in ice flow PI: Ian Joughin • Processed RADARSAT-1 mapping of Greenland for winter 2007-2008 • Provided PALSAR observation planning support • Providing processed PALSAR data for mapping of Greenland for the winter of 2009-2010 • Distribution of derived products assigned to NSIDC, preliminary products already available
MEaSUREs Projects Supported by ASF Ice Velocity Mapping of the Great Ice Sheets: Antarctica PI: Eric Rignot • Processed the PALSAR data for 2007-2008 season. • Processing the PALSAR data for the 2008-2009 season. • Acquired the PALSAR data for the 2009-2010 from JAXA and will process once the previous season is complete. • Distribution of derived products assigned to NSIDC. ESDR of small-scale kinematics of Arctic Ocean sea ice PI: Ron Kwok • Creating snapshots of sea ice every three days over the entire Arctic Ocean • ASF Completed winter 2005-2006 and winter 2006-2007; Winter 2004-2005 completed by JPL; Work in progress on winter 2003-2004 at ASF • Completed products available through the ASF SDC website for immediate download
First Contact Kwok’s Sea Ice MEaSUREs Project • ASF was involved in the proposal for the project. • Requirements for the data center were taken into consideration from the beginning of the project ASF DAAC of choice for other MEaSUREs projects • Delay in being named as the DAAC • This has put a real kink in the progress toward completion. • Detrimental to both the DAAC operations and to the successful completion of the MEaSUREs project This effectively hamstrings the current project
Data Products • Source data for the four projects will continue to be distributed by the ASF SDC • Precursor products for both the sea ice and wetlands projects are currently available from the ASF SDC • Data format for sea ice products determined by historical precedence
Agreements • ASF was included in the proposal of the Sea Ice project • Incorporated into ASF’s contract with NASA • It would have been preferred to do the same with the other MEaSUREs projects • The Antarctica and Greenland projects discussed the data needs for the projects after proposals were approved. • The impact of the large volume of data acquisition and processing on ASF was not accounted for in the project development
