  9. Corrosion Phenomenon • Reasons for corrosion in RCC Structure: • Moisture ingression • Exposure of structure to marine environment • Exposure of structure to aggressive industrial environment. • Cracks due to Mechanical Loading. • Presence of stray currents. • High water-cement ratio in RCC structures. • Low concrete tensile strength. • Electrical Contact with dissimilar metals. • Corrosion due to difference in environments.

  10. Photographs of Corrosion in RCC Structures

  11. Photographs of Corrosion in RCC Structures

  12. Photographs of Corrosion in RCC Structures

  13. Photographs of Corrosion in RCC Structures

  14. Prevention of Corrosion • Epoxy coating of steel re-bars. • Galvanize/Galalume coating of steel re-bars. • Addition of Corrosion inhibitors in RCC. • Cathode Protection. • Increasing concrete cover. • Chloride Extraction – By chemical spraying. • Concrete Coatings by Sealers. All the above procedures enhances the life of the structure in varying degree from 10-15 years only. Cost of maintenance is also high & during the designated life time of the structure. Also the maintenance cost can be more than the initial cost of structure in some cases

  15. Make In India- For the 1st time in complete range of sizes The Cost Effective solution to corrosion of reinforcement material Stainless Steel Re-Bars We recommend

  16. Studies on Stainless Steel Re-Bars Stainless Steel Rebar besides being cost – effective as proved by independent studies carried out on SS rebars. Some of the studies done are listed below: • “Improving Tomorrow’s Infrastructure: Extending the Life of Concrete Structures with Solid Stainless Steel Reinforcing Bar” - by Bergmann and Schnell. - Improvements in the life of the reinforcing can translate directly into extended life of the structure. • “Corrosion Resistance of Alternative Reinforcing Bars: An Accelerated Test”  by Wiss, Janney Elstner Associates - SS 316 and 2205 stainless bars exhibited phenomenal low corrosion rates, approximately 0.1 percent of conventional steel. • “A Pilot Experimental Study on the Low Cycle Fatigue Behavior of Stainless Steel Rebars for Earthquake Engineering Applications” by Yihui Zhou, Yu-Chen Ou, George C. Lee and Jerome S. O’Connor, University at Buffalo  –  In general, the three types of stainless steel (Enduramet 32, 2205 duplex and 316LN), are better than A706 G60.

  17. Studies…Contd. • “Effects of Galvanic Coupling between Carbon Steel and Stainless Steel Reinforcement in Concrete” by Bertolini, Gastaldi, Pedeferri and Pedeferri • “Galvanic Coupling between Carbon Steel and Stainless Steel Reinforcements” by Qian, The judicious use of stainless steel with carbon steel in the high-corrosion-risk areas of a concrete structure can be a cost-effective option for reducing corrosion and greatly extending the service life of concrete structure. • D.B. McDonald, D.W. Pfeifer, Y.P. Virmani, Corrosion-resistant reinforcing bars Findings of a 5-year FHWA Study. Int. Conf. Corrosion and Rehabilitation of Reinforced Concrete Structures.FHW, Orlando 7–11 December 1998. • B. Elsener, L. Bertolini, R.B Polder, P. Pedeferri, Corrosion Of Steel In Concrete Prevention, Diagnosis, Repair, John Wiley and Sons Ltd., Weinheim, 2004. • “Guide for use of Stainless Steel Reinforcement in Concrete Structures” Nordic Innovation Centre Project 2006

  18. Application of Stainless Steel Re-Bars • River crossings & Highway bridges. • Highway underpass & Tunnels • Sea Walls & quays • Coastal structures • Structures where De-caking of ice by salt spray is done • Airport bridges & taxiways • Piers, docks and moorings • Water and sewage treatment plants • Concrete structures in refineries, chemical processing

  19. Application of Stainless Steel Re-Bars..Contd. • Plants and power generating plants • Concrete structures subjected to very low temp (Ex. liquefied gas storage) • Restoration of heritage buildings • Monumental building build for life time • Strengthening of old bridges

  20. Benefits of Stainless Steel Re-Bars • Long Term Cost Advantage-Near Zero maintenance cost for designated life of the structure. • Low Life Cycle Cost-Almost Corrosion Free • Earthquake Resistant Properties • High Mechanical Strength, Low Thermal Expansion, Good Weld ability, High Energy Absorption, Good Fatigue Resistance • Stability at Low & High Temperatures- SS-Rebar can be used in frost & cold environments which causes cracking & splitting from the steel beneath as well as has superior resistance to heat at elevated temperature “BUILD IT & FORGET IT”
