LQ Cable Plan FY-10 • Relocation of cabling facility is complete • Machine has been commissioned with 2 NbTi runs • LQ cable fabricated in FY10 • Shipped 2 UL of cable with RRP 108/127 to FNAL on April 16 • Fabricate 2 UL August 2010 (tentative) • Wire to be delivered in July or August LARP CM14 – D.R. Dietderich

HQ Cable and Strand Inventory • R&D wire being developed by the Conductor Development Program (CDP) of HEP wire will be used in HQ coils • 11976 RRP 108/127 Ti-doped ~22kg • In LBL inventory • 12099 RRP 108/127 Ti-doped ~29kg • Ready to ship to LBL • Being processed to RRP 192/217 ~25kg? Could change to 127 • Ship in 2 months • Wire for HQ • RRP 54/61wire in LARP inventory, 2 or 3 UL • Billets 11588 and 11589 ~70kg. • RRP 108/127 wire delivered in Feb. to fabricate 2UL. Standard 2 Pass LARP Cable Fabrication Procedure • 1st Pass • Fabricate cable slightly over size by 50-100 microns • Stop run at 5m and inspect cable • Inspect cross-sectional images for strand deformation • Measure and facet size at the edge of the cable and correlate it to the cable pitch length. • Anneal at 200C/4 hrs • Softens Cu and cable contracts by ~0.25% in length • Plus the width and thickness of the cable increases • 2nd Pass • Re-roll cable to the nominal thickness: TQ ~ 1.26 mm, HQ ~ 1.44 • Stop run at 5m and inspect cable • Compacts cable making it more mechanically stable for coil winding LARP CM14 – D.R. Dimensional Changes of Strand and Cable • Strand dimensional changes for complete reaction • Decrease in length 0.4-5% • Diameter increases 0.800 mm to 0.816 mm • Anneal after first pass • Decrease in length ~0.2% • Final reaction: • Sample not confined in thickness and width • Decrease in length ~0.2% • For a confined cable?   10. 2 Pass Cables with Cores • Cable 987 cores • Material experiments cables made in two passes. • Want cores with little mechanical strength • MgO paper tape • S-glass woven tape • Cable sections have been annealed and re-rolled • Need measurements of Ra and Rc MgO Paper removed after cabling Mandrel with slot LARP CM14 – D.R.   14. AC Loss Measurements • AC loss measurements are to be done by OSU (Mike Sumption) • Cables with MgO and S-glass core • To determine their effectiveness in decoupling the top and bottom strands of the cable LARP CM14 – D.R. Dietderich

  15. 1 Pass Cable Fabrication • Want to make cables in 1 pass • Mechanically the cores are different but, • How are their electrical performance? • S-glass, MgO paper, and 316 Stainless Steel • Need to anneal strand • Presently LARP will anneal CDP and LARP strand • Future wire OST anneal prior to final draw and twist. • OST anneals NbTi wire at 180C +/- 15C LARP CM14 – D.R. Dietderich

HQ Cables with Cores • Additions of core may require cable to have a mid-thickness greater than 1.44 mm. • Since the magnet cross-section have been fixed there are at least 2 options if thicker cable required: • Decrease insulation thickness • Nominally 0.100 mm • Decrease strand diameter from 0.800 mm • The cored cable R&D effort must determine this LARP CM14 – D.R. Dietderich

Summary • Future LQ Cable fabrication • 2 UL in August if wire arrives in July • Future HQ Cable fabrication • 1 UL May (CDP RRP 108/127) • 1 UL June (LARP RRP 54/61) • 1 + 1 UL July (CDP + LARP) • 2 UL Sept.
