  2. Ardscoil Phadraig offers a wide variety of subjects in First Year. This is done so that students can experience as many subjects as possible prior to deciding areas of study for Junior Cert. Students now have to choose subjects for their Junior Certificate

  3. There is no need to be concerned about making these choices Adolescence is a time to explore different career choices However, it is important that students keep their options open

  4. Entry to Third Level Three separate criteria • Matriculation Requirements • Course Requirements • Points

  5. Matriculation Requirements • Matriculation requirements are the basic standard that a third level college requires students to reach before they are deemed eligible to be considered for a place on a course in that college

  6. Matriculation Requirements • Matriculation requirements vary from college to college • They also depend on the level of the course being applied for

  7. Matriculation Requirements for NUI Colleges*For Certain Courses Irish English *A Third Language *Maths Any Two/Three other Matriculation Subjects

  8. Ordinary Level D (Pass) in a third language required for: • Entry to NUI Colleges (selected courses) • National College of Art and Design ( or will accept Art instead) • Leisure Management, Hotel and Catering Management, Tourism (DIT) • Cadets • Medicine (RCSI)

  9. No Third Language Required For: • Entry to most courses in TCD, UL, DCU • Engineering and Science Degrees in UCD, NUI Maynooth, NUI Galway, UCC except Biotechnology NUI Galway • Agriculture- University College Dublin • Institutes of Technology unless part of area of study • Gardaí (English/Another Language) Nursing, Apprenticeships, Ballyhaise • Most Further Education Courses

  10. French Caution A modern language is, at present, a matriculation requirement for many National University of Ireland courses therefore it is important that students think carefully and speak to their parents and the Guidance Counsellor before deciding to drop French

  11. Points and Course Requirements It is important that students ‘push themselves’ and take as many subjects as possible at Higher Level in the Junior Cert because Higher Level subjects are awarded higher points in LC and are required for some courses

  12. Irish Higher C3 or greater in Irish is a course requirement for Primary School Teaching and for courses that have a large component of Irish in them.

  13. Maths • Higher C or greater is a course requirement for most Level 8 Engineering degrees • Higher Level Maths course requirement for courses that have Maths as a core component of the degree

  14. Irish Leaving Certificate Points

  15. * 25 bonus points will be added to the points score for Leaving Certificate Higher Level Mathematics. # Points for Foundation Level Mathematics will be awarded by certain institutions. LCVP points awarded: Distinction - 70, Merit - 50, Pass - 30

  16. Subject Selection for Junior Cert Core Subjects • English • Irish • Maths • Science • History • Geography • CSPE • Business • Students are also timetabled for PE and Religion and SPHE

  18. In conclusion it is: • Important for students to take subjects in which they have an interest • Important for students to keep options open • Important for students to take subjects at Higher Level if at all possible especially at Junior Cert level • Thank you all for listening
