In 1868 a residence was built on this site for the French governor-general of Cochin-China and gradually it expanded to become Norodom Palace. When the French departed, the palace became home to the South Vietnamese president Ngo Dinh Diem. So unpopular was Diem that his own air force bombed the palace in 1962 in an unsuccessful attempt to kill him, and most of the colonial-era structure was damaged

Designed by Paris-trained Vietnamese architect Ngo Viet Thu, it is an outstanding example of 1960s architecture, with an airy and open atmosphere.

Street vending is an essential part of city life. Street vendors can be roughly divided into three types: those who constantly move around either by bike or on foot, those have a stable stand on a street and lastly, those who own a shop and expand their products on the pavement.

Internet image Vietnamese Mickey Mouse Plant, Hoa Mai, Mai Vang, Hoang Mai. The most celebrated flower in Vietnam, Ochna integerrima blooms profusely on the occasion of 'Tet', the Vietnamese New Year. This is a rather slow growing, medium size shrub that can be trained into miniature tree. In winter the plant is covered with pretty bright yellow flowers, believed to bring good luck and prosperity. They are followed by cute shiny black berries on bright red sepals that resemble the face of Mickey Mouse. The plant is easy to grow and relatively cold hardy (to light freeze).
Vietnamese people have a fairy tale about Ochna integerrima. The story is about a kind and brave girl. She fought a monster to protect the villagers. Unfortunately, she died after the battle. Her bravery touched the Gods. So, although she died, every New Year comes, she is revived to visit her family and her village for 9 days. When her parents died, she transformed into a flowering tree. Every time the New Year comes, the flowers bloom brightly like the yellow shirt she usually wears. That is Ochna integerrima.
Vietnamese people believe that, on Tet holiday, Ochna integerrima can banish ghosts throughout the year
Delicate bright yellow flowers blanket the entire canopy of the tree when its in full bloom and is spectacular to see. Prized for its flowers, in Vietnam where they are celebrated annually, the tree is also widely collected by Bonsai growers, as it adapts well to the smaller shallow pots forming delightfully graceful trunks and branches. The abundant flowers are slowly followed by glowing red sepals that bare shiny, almost black berries and are equally as ornamental as the tree itself. Thought to bring prosperity and good luck, by those who get to grow and view the tree. Easy to grow, makes this a must have variety for the small urban garden.
