  2. Autumn in Hanoi begins when people can feel the smell of Hoa Sua (that means milk flowers) in the streets at cool nights and it lasts from September to November before getting cold

  3. The fragrant milkflower tree (Alstonia scholaris) has become an unforgettable characteristic of autumn in Ha Noi. The flower became more widely known in 1978 after a song named Hoa Sua (Milkflower) written by composer Hong Dang became a favourite

  4. Alstonia scholaris, commonly called blackboard tree or devil's tree in English, is an evergreen tropical tree

  5. Alstonia scholaris is native to southern China, tropical Asia and Australasia

  6. Alstonia scholaris is a glabrous tree and grows up to 40 m (130 ft) tall

  8. Flowers bloom in the month October. The flowers are very fragrant similar to the flower of Cestrum nocturnum

  9. The botanical name is Alstonia scholaris or Echites scholaris or Pala scholaris.  The tree has got its generic name from the renowned 18th century botanist, Prof. C. Alston of Edinburgh University

  10. The specific name scholaris is derived from the traditional use of the wood for slates or school boards in Myanmar

  11. Alstonia scholaris is the state tree of West Bengal, India. During Convocation the leaves of Alstonia scholaris (Saptaparni) are awarded to graduates and postgraduates and scholars of Visva-Bharati University by Chancellor who in turn always the Prime Minister of India (though to prevent excessive damage to environment in recent years Vice Chancellor of university on behalf of all students accept one Saptaparni from Chancellor) this tradition signifies the name of the plant. This Tradition was initiated by the founder of the University Gurudeb Rabindranath Tagore

  13. Blackboard Tree Flowers flourish in September and October so it’s the signal of autumn in Vietnam. This type of flower is planted in many places but it has become a symbol for Hanoi’s autumn

  14. The white clusters of flowers look like the tiny white lanterns hidden behind the greenish foliage

  15. Its mature bark is grayish and its young branches are copiously marked with lenticels

  16. These flower blooms spread the intensively sweet scent into small alleys and streets of the capital.

  17. When autumn comes, Hanoi is passionate with Alstonia scholaris. Streets and lanes are full of white flowers, raising feelings in people’s hearts. The flower has gone into poems, arts and into music, as an attractive lover in songs by composer, Trinh Cong Son

  18. The tree is highly medicinal and is immensely valuable from Ayurvedic point of view. It is Anticancer, Antimicrobicidal, analgesic, febrifuge, stimulant, Antimalarial, antiamoebic, antidiarrheal, antihypertensive,  hepato-protective, immune-modulatory, anti-asthmatic, anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-fertility, anti-diabetic, Anti-pyretic and cardiotonic
