  2. Slovenia, a country in southeastern Europe, is bordered by Austria, Croatia, Hungary, and Italy. The former constituent republic of Yugoslavia is almost landlocked; it has only a short (46 km) coastline at the Adriatic Sea between Italy and Croatia With an area of 20,273 km² Slovenia landscape offers a small coastal strip in south west, and an alpine mountain region with the Julian Alps, a mountain range that stretch from northeastern Italy to Slovenia, within the Julian Alps lies the country's highest mountain the Triglav at 2,864 m. In the north there are the Karawanks, a mountain range of the Southern Limestone Alps on the border between Slovenia and Austria. Almost 63% of Slovenia is forested area. The country has a population of just over 2 million people. Largest city and capital is Ljubljana with about 280,000 residents (in 2016). 4. Jože Plečnik (1872 –1957) was a Slovene architect who had a major impact on the modern identity of the city of Ljubljana, most notably by designing the iconic Triple Bridge as well as the embankments along the Ljubljanica River. His architectural imprint on Ljubljana has been compared to the impact Antoni Gaudí had on Barcelona The architectural legacy of Jože Plečnik and his original approach to buildings and urban planning includes the most beautiful features of Ljubljana. This legacy is on the UNESCO Tentative List Star Park Preseren Cathedral

  6. The river Ljubljanica

  7. The Ljubljanica, river with its interesting bridges and picturesque old city centre embankments, is one of Ljubljana's most notable landmarks

  8. The Slovenian capital has been given the permanent title of UNESCO's City of Literature, which is reserved for cities with rich a heritage in literature that promote their local creative scene and conform to UNESCO's goal of fostering cultural diversity. Ljubljana also carried the UNSECO's World Book Capital title in 2012

  9. The Butchers' Bridge

  10. The Butchers' Bridge is a footbridge crossing the river Ljubljanica and it connects the Ljubljana Central Market and the Petkovšek Embankment The bridge was solemnly opened on 10 July 2010

  11. Across the bridge were placed statues of the famous Slovenian sculptor Jakov Brdar which represent figures of Ancient Greece and Christian/Jewish mythology. Among them you’ll find Adam and Eve ashamed and banished form the Paradise after being induced by the Serpent to taste from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil;

  13. The original idea for a bridge on the site was expressed in the 1930s by the architect Jože Plečnik.

  14. Although its name is Butcher’s Bridge, this is Ljubljana’s Love Bridge. It’s the place where couples and friends leave locks with their names carved. The modern bridge, which is far more simple than the original plan, features a staircase at its left entry, a glass walking belts at the sides, and two fences with steel wires and wide top shelves. It was designed by Jurij Kobe from the Atelier Arhitekti studio

  17. The famous architect Jože Plečnik (1872-1957) tried to model Ljubljana on ancient Athens. The multitude of his creations in the city, referred to as a whole as "Plečnik's Ljubljana", is considered to be one of the 20th century's most important total works of art

  18. The city's architecture is a mix of styles. Despite the appearance of large buildings, especially at the city's edge, Ljubljana's historic center remains intact. Ljubljana's downtown got its outline in the Middle Ages.

  19. Town hall

  20. The original City Hall building was completed in 1584. The fountain nearby has been designed and built around 1747 by the sculptor Francesco Robba

  21. The Robba Fountain, one of Ljubljana's best known Baroque monuments, also known as The Fountain of Three Carniolan Rivers, stands at the edge of the Mestni trg square, in front of Ljubljana Town Hall

  22. The Robba Fountain is inspired by Bernini‘s famous Roman Fountain of the Four Rivers at Piazza Navona, but modelled after Fontana del Pantheon, the fountain by Filippo Barigioni at Piazza della Rotonda

  23. It was created between 1743 and 1751 by the Venetian-born sculptor and architect Francesco Robba (1698-1757), who spent most of his life in Ljubljana and is considered to be the city's greatest Baroque master sculptor working in stone

  24. The sculptures of three river gods adorning it are believed to represent three Carniolan rivers: the Sava, the Ljubljanica and the Krka

  25. until the introduction of the euro in January 2007 the Robba Fountain was portrayed on the 5,000 Slovenian tolar  banknote

  26. The sculptures of three river gods adorning it are believed to represent three Carniolan rivers: the Sava, the Ljubljanica and the Krka

  27. The Fountain of Three Carniolan Rivers was Robba's last work in Ljubljana. While sculpting it, he became poor and as soon as the work was finished he moved to Zagreb

  28. The Fountain's ground plan is shaped in the form of Ljubljana's ancient three-leaf town seal

  29. In 2006, the original fountain was renovated and moved into the National Gallery, whereas at Town Square it has been replaced by a replica

  31. In the center of the fountain stands a 10-metre (33 ft) obelisk

  32. The sculptural part of the fountain is made of the Carrara marble and the obelisk is made of the local marble

  36. Francesco Robba (1698–1757) was an Italian sculptor of the Baroque period. His best-known work is the Fountain of the Three Rivers of Carniola. Other works in Ljubljana include the Narcissus Fountain, the main altar and the statues (1736) of St. James's Church, an altar in Ljubljana Cathedral, the majority of the main altar in the Franciscan Church of the Annunciation.  Francesco Robba is also the creator of the main altar of the Ursuline Church of the Holy Trinity and presumably also of the marble statue of the Holy Trinity Monument that stands in front of it
