  3. Christ the Redeemer of Maratea (Italian: Cristo Redentore di Maratea)

  4. Maratea is a town and comune of Basilicata, in the province of Potenza. It is the only town of the region on the Tyrrhenian coast and because of its beautiful scenery and coastline it has been called "the Pearl of the Tyrrhenian"

  6. The summit of Monte San Biagio

  7. One of the main characteristics of Maratea is the variety of its landscapes, varying from breath-taking sea views to wooded hillsides and majestic mountains which sweep down to the sea creating steep cliffs

  8. Owing to the considerable number of its churches and chapels Maratea has also been described as "the town with 44 churches”

  9. When Napoleon Bonaparte proclaimed himself King of Naples, Maratea was one of the few cities which did not accept French supremacy

  10. The ruins of the ancient Maratea Castle, destroyed by the French after the tender following a long siege, in December of 1806

  11. Maratea has a small harbour, which can accommodate up to 200 boats

  12. A dramatic winding road leads to the top, although it's more fun to walk the steep path that starts off Via Cappuccini in Maratea Borgo

  13. The road to Christ the Redeemer of Maratea (Italian: Cristo Redentore di Maratea) is asphalted

  14. The road to reach the top of the mountain is very spectacular with the final hairpin bends resting on piers with a few meters in height

  15. Starting from Maratea the road is 6.7 km. Over this distance the elevation gain is 376m. The average percentage is 5,61%. The road includes 18 hairpin turns. Go only when the weather is great. Otherwise, you won't see anything

  16. It's not an exaggeration. Is actually a road like a rollercoaster!

  17. In summer, for the strong influx of tourists is limited access by car to a parking lot a few hundred meters from the summit, at a place called Madonna della Pietà (Our Lady of Mercy), from where a shuttle bus takes visitors to the Basilica of San Biagio and the Christ

  18. Placed on mount San Biagio (about 640 meters above the sea level), facing the sanctuary, the colossal monument draws huge admiration and its arms outstretched upwards welcome all in the faith

  19. Christ the Redeemer of Maratea realized in 1965 was designed by Bruno Innocenti (1906-1996) of the Institute of Fine Arts in Florence and was commissioned by the Count Stefano Rivetti of Valcervo as a tribute to the people of Maratea

  20. Christ is visible from all around the Gulf of Policastro and, thanks to the will of Count Stefano Rivetti, has attracted over the years countless numbers of people. The Redeemer is the real pride of Maratea. There is no person visiting the “Gulf of Policastro” who does not look up at the old Maratea village and not feel attracted and invited to climb on top to see the glorious beauty and reality of this immense work that, with the passing of days, is increasingly assuming the character and the recognition of undisputed internationality
