  1. La scala di Santa Maria del Monte Caltagirone

  2. Caltagirone Caltagirone (Caltagiruniin Sicilian dialect) is nicknamed the Queen of Mount Erei. Located in the centre of the eastern part of the Province of Catania, its fame derives from the production, both ancient and modern, of the most refined, hand-painted Sicilian ceramics. The main landmark of the city is the 142-step monumental Staircase of Santa Maria del Monte, built from 1608 in the old part of the town.

  3. Scaladi Santa Maria del Monte - This long flight of steps connects the old (at the top) city, the seat of the religious authority, and the new one, where most public offices are located. On either side of this axis lie the two old quarters of San Giorgio and San Giacomo, characterized by narrow streets and concealing fine, mostly religious, buildings.

  4. Caltagirone La Scaladi Santa Maria del Monte has been through a couple of renovations in its four hundred year history, the most recent in the 1950s, when each of the 142 treads of the 130 long staircase was adorned with polychrome mosaics representative of the centuries of Sicilian majolica.

  5. Each century of recent history has been given 10 steps of alternating geometric, figurative and floral designs, starting at the bottom with traditional Arab designs and colours.  That’s right, for “recent” history, the people of Caltagirone count back twelve or thirteen centuries. The stairs have long been a focal point of the community, with the celebration of the town’s patron saint, San Giacomo (St. James) on July 24th and 25th.

  6. Caltagirone Once a year, on and around the day of the city's patron saint, (St. James, 25 July), the staircase is illuminated with candles of different colors arranged in order to reconstruct an artistic drawing of several tens of meters. The stairs are lit with terra cotta oil lamps set inside sand filled colored paper bags – the colors of the bags create a design during the day. At night, the lamps are lit almost simultaneously by hundreds of locals.  The feast of the senses is completed with the aroma of the hundreds of liters of the best olive oil of the region burning into the night.

  7. Each year a contest is held - the winner's design is re-created for the St James Festival (he's the patron saint for Caltagirone) held the 24-25th of July.

  8. In the square of Santa Maria del Monte, atop the decorated staircase a polychrome maiolica mosaic represent The Taking of the Bell of Altavilla to Caltagirone, În piaţa Santa Maria del Monte , în partea de sus a scãrii decorate, existã un enorm panou de ceramicã policromã reprezentând aducerea clopotului de la Altavilla la Caltagirone.
