The Benefits and Limitations of a PCR Test
PCR testing is a common method used for testing for infectious diseases, such as Covid-19. This method has a wide range of advantages. One of them is the fact that it is valuable for detecting specific pathogens that are difficult to culture in vitro or require a long cultivation period. A PCR test is also significantly more rapid in providing results compared to culturing, and it enables earlier informed decision making. Other advantages of PCR testing include rapid diagnosis of bacteremia, particularly for low levels of bacteria in specimens, is very useful in detecting cases in extra pulmonary specimens which may be missed by smear and/or culture. Without doubt, a PCR test is a valuable screening tool. This method is still considered an adjunct test for certain diagnostic tests that still rely on smear and culture, like tuberculosis. Even though PCR testing has a lot of benefits, it has some limitations. This testing method alone may be limited as a diagnostic tool. There is still a need to culture for testing for drug/antibiotic susceptibility and genetic typing.
Another limitation with a rapid antigen test for travel is that post treatment diagnosis may be challenging. This method detects dead organisms that may be shed for weeks after the patient stops showing symptoms. It may also be clear regarding persistence of infection, and there is also the challenge of detecting dead organisms at this stage which may have no clinical relevance. While PCR testing is without doubt useful, PCR test results should not be used as the sole basis of a patient treatment management decision. All results should needs to be interpreted by a trained professional in conjunction with review of the patient’s history and clinical signs and symptoms.
