POLYGONS. New shapes, their properties, and new definitions. What is a polygon??. A polygon is a closed figure in a plane, formed by connecting line segments endpoint to endpoint with each segment intersecting exactly two others. Each line segments is called a SIDE.

  2. What is a polygon?? • A polygon is a closed figure in a plane, formed by connecting line segments endpoint to endpoint with each segment intersecting exactly two others. • Each line segments is called a SIDE. • Where two endpoints meet is called a VERTEX.

  3. For Example, • Polygons: Where are the sides and vertices? How many sides do each polygon have? How many vertices do each have?

  5. Naming Polygons • SIDESNAME 3 Triangle 4 Quadrilateral 5 Pentagon 6 Hexagon 7 Septagon 8 Octagon 9 Nonagon 10 Decagon n n-gon

  6. Naming A Polygon • Simply list the vertices in consecutive order. For example, A B E D C Pentagon AEDCB, or ABCDE. Could NOT be DACEB, BADCE, etc.

  7. Diagonals • A DIAGONAL of a polygon is a line segment that connects two nonconsecutive vertices. A E B D C
