  1. CANARIE-ORANO ROADM Update Marc Boulerice - C4 Tech - June 11, 2006

  2. Overview • Building ROADM from Chicago to NYC, via Detroit-Windsor, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Albany, Boston • Deploying Nortel CPL (Common Photonic Layer), 50Ghz spacing, C-band, 72 10Gb channel capacity • 20 year IRU with Level3 on fibre pair from Chicago to Detroit and Toronto to NYC • 17 year IRU with Telus on fibre pair between Detroit and Toronto • 37 sites total (including 3 glass-throughs)

  3. Why are we doing this? • High link allocation • Toronto – NYC • Chicago – Toronto • Toronto – Ottawa • Ottawa – Montreal • Low cost of expansion • Great opportunity to acquire fibre and build toward possible CAnet 5

  4. Layer 1 Topology (1)

  5. Layer 1 Topology (2)

  7. Co-management • Using phased approach, as CANARIE gains experience • CANARIE/ORANO co-managed between Windsor Public Library and Ottawa City Hall • Current plan is that ORANO owns 25% of network capacity (18 λ) from Windsor to Ottawa

  8. Fibre Delivery Status

  9. Deployment Status • All Site Surveys (except Montreal QIX) completed • Final design validation is awaiting Fibre Characterization of Detroit-Chatham, 151Front-Tor3R segments • 151Front-Tor3R – completion expected week of June 12th • Detroit-Chatham – August 24th to September 11th (escalated) • Current plan is to deploy in 2 stages • 2 segments - StarLight to WPL and 151Front to MANLAN • Connect both segments - Nortel to redeploy and re-tune when Detroit-Chatham and both Ottawa (mid-Sept) and Montreal (mid-Aug) spurs available

  10. Next Steps? • Planning similar build with BCnet and Netera in Western Canada
