  4. Italian regulation on dredged sediments Italianwastelegislation LG.D. 152/2006 - part IV, and amendaments. Dredged sediments: • Exclusion from the scope of waste legislation (Art. 185) • Waste • Ending to be waste (Art. 184-ter, quarter) • By-product (Art. 184-bis) Italian water legislation LG.D. 152/2006 - part III, as amended by M.D. 260/2010 • Goodwater status • Water Protection Plan of the river basin district • Annulsedimentsmonitoring for some substances Legislation on SIN L. 84/1994, Art, 5-bis, L. 27/2012, L. 221/2015, M.D. 7 Nov. 2008, M.D. 4 Aug. 2010. Dredged sediments: • Immersion atsea, reuse in water • Use on land • Storage in CDF • Outside SIN: Manual for marine sediments management’ (APAT, ICRAM, 2007) Legislation on excavated soil and rocks - M.D. 161/2012. • DS eligible to be used directly ; pollutants below C.S.C. • Re-use:nourishments, land improvements, restoration, road embankments, industrial production processes as quarry materials.

  17. Project LIFE14 ENV/IT/113 - Demonstration of the suitability of dredged remediated sediments for safe and sustainable horticulture production Action B.1: Analysis of sediment eco-toxicity • Microbial toxicity test • Phytotoxicity test • Microcrustacean toxicity test Toxicity threshold: 20% inhibition of the measured endpoints (Persoone et al., 2003)

  18. Sediment ecotoxicity Microbial toxicity: Vibrio fischeri test Microbial toxicity during landfarming Aboatox Oy Inhibition% = 100 - [(TL15/ KF *TL0) * 100] KF = CL15/CL0

  22. Sediment ecotoxicity: Microcrustacean toxicity: Daphnia magna Microcrustacean toxicity during landfarming PE= 100 * N.I./T N.I. = n° immobilized neonates T = n° total neonates

  23. Eco toxicity after strawberry plant growth

  24. Action C.1: Monitoring and validation of treated sediments Previous results: no phytoremediation sediment toxicity during plant growth

  26. Conclusions Phytoremediated sediment showed no significant ecological toxicity The main reason for hindrance in the sediment use for horticulture is its origin from a National Priority Interest Polluted site (SIN) Because phytoremediated sediments from a ‘worst scenario’ responded positively, dredged sediments may pass all tests requested by the current legislation for growing media

  27. - The end - Thanks for the attention
