Advantages of the AP program • College credit – up to 6 semester hours for $87 test fee • Credit conferring differs from school to school based upon test score, check w/ admissions, web pages, etc. • Academic rigor in the senior year • Analytical skills for higher level thinking • Writing skills for college level writing

  4. How AP Lit differs from other 12th grade options • Focus exclusively fiction • Some literary criticism • In-class, timed essays v. out of class • Major poetry focus • HW almost exclusively reading – 30 pages per night is typical w/ major works • Not just reading for comprehension – reading for analysis

SENIOR YEAR CONCERNS • College essays – • Not assigned for class but I will ABSOLUTELY read/comment on them • English Department month of October • Wednesday mornings 7:25-7:50 in library/media center • Teachers available to meet one-on-one to proof essays • Bring prompt and concerns • Applications/Recs

AP Lit Exam • Scoring 1-5, 5 is best, 3 is passing score • Historically, average at WHS last 6 years is between 3.4-3.9 • 2 sections • 1st section: Multiple Choice • 1 hour to read 5 literary texts (some prose, some poetry) that students have not been exposed to prior and answer 55 Analytical questions • 2nd section: Essay • 2 hours to respond in well-organized manner to 3 essay prompts • Poetry • Prose • Open-ended

Brief Syllabus • Major texts • Jane Eyre– Bronte • King Lear– Shakespeare • A Thousand Acres – Jane Smiley • The Scarlet Letter – Hawthorne • Beowulf/Grendel – Anonymous/Gardner • Oedipus the King - Sophocles • Writing • Majority – in-class essays, lit analysis • Poetry • Explication, lit analysis, quizzes • Vocabulary program • Sadlier-Oxford Level H
