  1. Watson Academy Comprehensive Program Review March 15, 2013 Left to Right: Marcy Rosenthal, Watson Academy Director, Julie Redmond , HAYS Company, and John Larivee, CRJ, CEO

  2. HIGHLIGHTS • August:Watson Academy (WA) Director conducted training at Elizabeth Stone House on 8/28 on boundaries and diversity and trauma. First trainings facilitated by WA for outside agency with fees. • September:New life skill coordinator , Gayle Saks hired and trained. • October: Life skill groups start up with Gayle Saks. WA Director participated in emerging leaders pilot program follow-up with John Larivee. • November:Harvard PBHA tutoring starts at Sargent House and new Watson House program. Connected with YWCA to secure services for McGrath House - women’s health groups. Attended three-day EPICS training in NH - beginning of CJI/SJS collaboration with University of Cincinnati. • January: Tapes and conference calls begin for follow-up EPICS training. Gayle Saks attends EPICS training in Virginia. WA Annual Report completed and compiled by SQA. Met with Coolidge House case management staff to assist with curriculum and planning for life skills groups. • WA Director met with Maria Alexson and Adrienne Methot to begin process of setting up supervisor training for SJS Department.

STAFF TURNOVER RATES(2/1/12 to 1/31/13) • Last CPR, WA staff turnover was 33.3% compared to SJS’s 26.9% (November 2011 – April 2012) • Watson Academy is comprised of 1 FT Program Director and 1 PT Life Skills Coordinator (LSC). The 33.3% turnover reflects the hiring a new LSC. Data obtained from HR Turnover Reports

TRAININGS • CPR/First Aid/AED: Universal Precautions, CPR, Basic First Aid, First Aid, AIDS in the Workplace; • Boundaries and Diversity: Cultural Diversity, Boundaries; • Report Writing: CDC Report Writing/Report Writing; • Group Facilitation/Train the Trainer; • Sexual Misconduct Prevention (PREA):Staff Integrity and Ethics, Preventing, Identifying handling of Sexual Abuse and Assault, Interpersonal Relationships and Communication Skills; • Substance Abuse: Substance Abuse Awareness; • Suicide Prevention: Signs of Suicide and Suicide Prevention; • Treatment Culture: Staff Integrity and Ethics, Crisis Intervention, Interpersonal Relationships and Communication Skills, Standards of Conduct, Counseling Techniques; • Basic Trauma: Basic Trauma, Overview of signs and symptoms; • Crisis Prevention and Personal Safety. TRAINING EVALUATIONS170 Evaluations - August 2012 to January 2013 • Last CPR, 86 Evaluations, February 2011 – April 2012 (questions not added to evaluations until 2/12): • Knowledge PRIOR to the training: 44.3% High and 44.3% Medium • Knowledge AFTER the training: 89.9% High and 8.9% Medium Information obtained from Watson Academy Training Evaluations

TRAINING EVALUATIONS170 Evaluations - August 2012 to January 2013 • Last CPR, 163 Evaluations (November 2011 – April 2012): • The material presented was clear and easy to see – this question was added to evaluations in February 2012 • Training started on time: SA: 110 A: 42 N.O. =4 D:6 • There was sufficient time to have questions answered: • SA: 95 A: 36 N.O. = 1 D:3 Information obtained from Watson Academy Training Evaluations

TRAINING EVALUATIONS170 Evaluations August 2012 – January 2013 STAFF COMMENTS: I really liked this aspect of the training Treatment Culture Trainings: "This course related to all different ones & positions within CRJ as a whole“ “Willingness of members to give feedback and participate” “The wide variety of useful strategies I can use to improve my work environment” Boundaries/Diversity/PREA Trainings: “We were able to interact with the discussions and Marcy made the environment comfortable” "The examples/case studies made it easier to understand the material being taught“ "The trainer was friendly, encouraged interactions and conversation among all employees and did great!“ "I liked learning about boundaries, red flags and certain things to look for” "Marcy is an excellent instructor; her trainings are informative" LSI Trainings: "Being able to do a case study LSI“ “I have a better understanding of why we use LSI and how to utilize the results“ "Knowing how to conduct and use the LSI to benefit the clients“

Life Skills Programs August 2012 – January 2013 • A total of 87 sessions were held and 328 clients served • Programs served by the Life Skills component are McGrath House, Coolidge House, Brooke House, Sargent House, and the Somerville Transition Shelter (STS).  • The current life skills curriculum consists of topics including independent living skills, job readiness preparation, goal setting, communication skills, stress management, nutrition and health, and parenting.   15. Harvard Tutoring Programs August 2012 – January 2013 • The Harvard (PBHA) Tutoring program was on hiatus the months of August 2012 – October 2012 • Last CPR, (November 2010- April 2011), a total of 73 clients served and a total of 30 sessions conducted • In FY 2012, Harvard University students conducted 33 sessions with 59 youth to participate in: one-on-one current event discussions; educational activities and games; trivia contests; and, history and political discussion. The tutoring program was implemented at both Watson House and Sargent House during the fall semester. Information obtained from Watson Academy Monthly Reports
