  2. Overview • Goals of the presentation • Inform process of developing evaluation of prevention program • Present evaluation data • Look for comments/suggestions on how to continue to do prevention evaluations

  3. Brandon middle years project • Based on observation that about 30% of grade 9 students had already tried drugs • Prevention earlier? • High school intervention program relatively effective • Add prevention to middle schools (grade 7 & 8)?

Project Goals/Objectives Increase knowledge about drugs in grade 7 & 8 students, and provide decision-making skills that change intentions to use substances • increase knowledge about drugs • improve decision-making capacity about drug use • reduce the intention to use drugs • reduce the use of drugs (?)

  5. Methodology • Experimental design • All classes got program • Pre and post measures to all • 4 waves (semesters) • Program introduced sequentially to randomly selected classes

  6. Methodology • 2 schools, 1 with 7 grade 7 and 5 grade 8 classes, 1 with 3 grade 7 and 5 grade 8 classes • Balance between school and grades • 3 terms – 4 testings
