  1. Action Research • Class: V A • Subject: English • Number of Students: 19 • Time Duration: By the end of Term B (April – October) • By: Aasefa Hakim

  2. My Values • I want my students to speak in English. • I want my students to be independent. • I want my students to respect every one. • I want my students to be honest in the work they do. • I want my students to use polite words.

  3. Skill Involved • Development of Communication skills (English)

  4. Topic How do I get my students to talk to each other in English when they are in the school during task execution which involves task discussion ?

  5. Why I have taken this? • Class IV – I had observed they used to speak rude/ unsocial words which is not accepted by the society. • Since these words are spoken in Hindi so I feel that- • If they speak in English at least they will not use such words.

  6. What I have done so far? • 1st week I observed how they were speaking. • This observation was done when they were given group discussion tasks, when they were talking to their friends, during break. • I observed that every one was speaking in Hindi.

  7. Contd…… • Next 2 weeks I had asked them to speak in English. If by mistake they spoke any Hindi word/sentence they had a chance to change that into English. If they were not changing that then I had prepared a sheet and they used to get a cross/star.

  8. Then onwards I did not give them any chance of speaking in Hindi.

  9. Puppet show (MI- RBT Task)

  10. Was I successful? Performance Chart Yes, to some extent • Based on the sheet – the students get stars and crosses so the average is taken and then the stars are given on the performance chart. • On the performance chart 19 penguins are there with the students name and photos on it.

  11. Observation • With the performance chart and the sheet of crosses and stars I found that there was a tremendous improvement of speaking in English. • Now I find that at least 80% of my students speak in English. • 20% occasionally speak in Hindi. This could be that they are habituated of speaking in Hindi.

  12. Question I asked? I asked them that you love your Hindi classes as you get a chance to speak in Hindi. Answer : No, now I am habituated of speaking in English.

  13. Intervention strategies planned: • Giving more of Role play tasks. • Asking other teachers to observe them carefully and report to me. • Include more and more of vocabulary tasks • Self and peer evaluation • Reading • Creating their own stories

  14. Strategy 1: Role play • The students were given more role plays in their MI – RBT Tasks. • It was observed that when they were discussing in the class when the teacher was there everyone was speaking in English. • While performing also, when few students were back stage and when they had to converse among them they were speaking in English.

  15. Strategy 2: Teacher’s Feedback • The other teachers (Activity coaches) were given a similar sheet. • If they found that the child was speaking in Hindi so they had to put a cross. • It was observed that in the initial stages the students were conscious and they were speaking in English. • But the later stage 80 per cent students were speaking in Hindi.

  16. Strategy 3: Include Vocabulary Tasks • I told the students that roll no. wise every child will bring a new word with the meaning and create his/her own sentence. • The student who brings the word, first has to ask the audience. If the audience can answer then they will get a smile. • The students are doing it now also. Every day we have a new word of the day. • Some of them are even using it when they require it. • This strategy has improved my students vocabulary to some extent.

  17. Strategy 4: Self and Peer Evaluation • For the self evaluation the students were given the self appraisal sheet for every cycle. • It was about their experience of speaking in English. • For the peer evaluation the students kept reporting the teacher about their peers specially when they go out for the activity. • It was observed that when the students were not in the class they were speaking in Hindi. • Now a days the number of students speaking in Hindi has also increased about 60 per cent. • These students are either speaking a word of a sentence in Hindi.

  18. Strategy 5: Reading • Through reading, the students have improved if I compare them from Term A to Term C. • The students have also developed the habit of reading books in their free time in the class from our class library. • From the school library also they read the books and share it with their friends and also encourage them to read the books.

  19. Strategy 6: Creating own stories. • Creating their own stories was given to them in their Task sheets – where the students could create their own stories looking at the picture or reading the outline but their grammar was not correct and they didn’t knew how to start or end the story. • So I gave them the starting as well as the ending line of the story so about 20 per cent of students were able to write. • Through the I pad app- Story wheel the students have created their own stories.

  20. Overall observation of students speaking in English with the strategies used.

  21. Conclusion • At the end I would like to conclude that I was not successful in my Action Research project because the students are here and there speaking in Hindi. • But I am happy that about 70 – 80 percent ar speaking in English.

  22. THANK YOU
