  1. WEIGHT LOSS SURGERY - A BETTER SOLUTION WHEN PATIENTS AREN'T TOO OBESE One chronic medical condition causing a lot of concern due to its increasing global prevalence is obesity. In simple terms, it means the accumulation of excess adipose or fat tissue in the body. Fat is deposited when there is an imbalance between energy intake and expenditure which favors more intake. Many factors have been implicated as possible predisposing factors which include the role of genetics, lifestyle choices, the environment and socio-economic status. Beyond aesthetic concerns, obesity has been established as a risk factor for the development of other medical conditions including Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, heart disease, hypertension, disturbance of the menstrual cycle, depression etc. Of particular importance is truncal obesity i.e. fat accumulation around the waist and tummy. This is due to its ability to predispose to insulin resistance which is a precursor for type 2 diabetes Mellitus. Traditional approaches to the management of obesity have included the change in nutritional habits, lifestyle modifications, increasing exercises and drugs. However, even with the most disciplined of dietary and exercise regimens, the rate of regaining lost weight is frustratingly high and over the long term difficult to attain and maintain.

  2. Surgical interventions such as weight loss surgery or obesity surgery have started to gain prominence as a treatment option due to the remarkable weight loss results achievable, with impressive results which include the control of blood sugar levels in diabetic patients. This comes with minimal intra and post operative complications especially when carried out by well trained, experienced and skilled surgeons at a facility that is well equipped and conducive.

  3. Obesity surgery options include gastric banding, sleeve mastectomy, gastric bypass surgery, transit bipartition, ileal interposition (transposition), biliopancreatic diversion, duodenal switch etc. Previously, obesity surgery was indicated for only patients with a body mass index (BMI) greater than 40 or those with a BMI in the range 35-40 who also have other serious co-morbidities like diabetes. Emerging information and results of recent research have shown that obesity surgery or Bariatric surgical options can be extended to patients who aren't very obese, whose BMI falls below 35 for those with co-existing serious medical conditions. Thus as opposed to the former practice of limiting obesity surgery to very obese patients, individuals who aren't very obese can benefit maximally from weight loss surgery including loss of weight and better control of blood sugar levels without the need for drugs and insulin.
