  8. The Secret Garden by: Frances Hodgson Burnett (example from a former 6th grade student) Just a lonely girl...the only one to survive the treacherous sickness running through the veins of stubborn little Mary's hometown. While being cared for by a lonely widower, Mary finds a key and the door to a secret garden outside with the help of a robin. Mary hears weeping during the night and soon figures out that it is a the widower's lonely, obnoxious son, Colin; who has a terrible back injury and no one thinks he will live. Later, Mary secretly sneaks Colin into the enchanting garden where he becomes more lively as the garden returns to life. This is the place where he makes plans to walk and run like a normal boy. (summary of what happens to the main character...what 3 events are talked about in this paragraph?) I loved this book for the friendship and sensitivity between the characters. I loved the way the book flowed together and I enjoyed all of the character's personalities. Also, Mary and Colin's path to friendship throughout the story and how they change from selfish and snooty to kind and caring was meaningful. This is also a sweet story of how they will keep the garden alive and all the troubles the characters go through. (Her opinion about the book is clear and supported. Pick out some strong word choice and voice used)

  9. You will be entranced by The Secret Garden and its gripping story line. This book will have you laughing and crying just like the characters as if you were in the story. I know you will have a hard time trying to put this book down. This book will take you to a new world with its excitement as the children discover a new world in the garden. Everyone who reads this book will surely want to read it again and again; never letting the magic stop! (Her recommendation for the book is clear and she gives rationale or reasons for her thoughts) Now it's YOUR turn to choose a book and begin your review. You are the writer and you want your readers to be excited about the book you are recommending. Create a rough draft putting your ideas in the three paragraphs...don't worry about sentences right now, just your ideas and strong word choice.

  10. MUSIC REVIEW What is your favorite music? This is where you have the chance to review any one of your favorite albums...review means to evaluate or examine. Your review MUST include the following: • Title of album and the name of performer or band • Paragraph about any theme running through the entire album.
