  1. IPv6 Subnet Model Analysis Syam Madanapalli LogicaCMG On-behalf of v6subnet Design Team Presented by Soohong Daniel Park

  2. The Design Team Participants • Dave Thaler • David Johnston • Junghoon Jee • Max Riegel • Myungki Shin • Syam Madanapalli. • James Kempf • Behcet Sarikaya • Basavaraj Patil • JinHyeock Choi • 16ng chairs • Gabriel Montenegro • Soohong Daniel Park • Shepherding AD • Jari Arkko

  3. The Goal • To analyze the IPv6 link models that can be applied for the 802.16 based networks • And recommend preferably one link model for the standardization

  4. The Models Considered • NBMA Link Model • Shared Prefix Model • Point-to-point Link Model • Unique Prefix Model • Multicast Capable Link Model • Ethernet Like Model

  5. NBMA Link Model • The AR, Multiple BSs attached to the AR and all MSs attached to these BSs forms an IP Link • One or more prefixes are assigned to the link • DAD is performed using Relay DAD L3 AR Shared Link L2 BS MAC Conn. Tunnel L1

  6. P2P Link Model • P2P Link • Using PPP • No PPP CS exist • Using L2 tunnel • Per MS GRE Tunnel • VLAN Tag (802.1q) • May not support sufficient MSs; Max. 4K MS1 BS AR P2P Link 1 MAC Conn. Tunnel MS2 P2P Link 2 MAC Conn. Tunnel MS3 P2P Link 3 MAC Conn. Tunnel

  7. Multicast Capable Link Model MS1 • Similar to Ethernet Link Model • Supports full multicast with Bridging • BS is required to do multicast filtering for not to deliver unwanted packets to MSs that are not part of the multicast group BS1 AR1 MS2 MS3 BS2 AR2 MS4

  8. Prefix Assignment • NBMA Link Model • All MSs share one ore more prefixes that are assigned to the link • P2P Link Model • One or more prefixes are assigned to an MS • Multicast Capable Link Model • All MSs share one ore more prefixes that are assigned to the link

  9. Address Autoconfiguratio • All link models support standard IPv6 address autoconfiguration methods defined in RFC 2462 and DHCPv6

  10. Duplicate Address Detection • NBMA Link Model • Relay DAD • Based on Address Cache • P2P Link Model • DAD is required for link local addresses between MS and AR • Multicast Capable Link Model • As defined in RFC 2462

  11. Reuse of existing standards • All models reuse the existing standards

  12. On-link Multicast Support • NBMA Link Model • AR can provide proxying • Selective multicast • P2P Link Model • Only two nodes exists on the link • Multicast Capable Link Model • Full support for multicast

  13. Consistency in IP Link Definition • NBMA Link Model • External and link local traffic needs to be differentiated • P2P Link Model • Either PPP or per MS GRE tunnel is required • Multicast Capable Link Model • Full compliance to RFC 2461

  14. Packet Forwarding • NBMA Link Model • External packets are routed • On-link packets are bridged • P2P Link Model • Works normally • Multicast Capable Link Model • Location of the bridging • AR – for WiMAX Networks

  15. Effect on Dormant Mode • NBMA Link Model • Not affected • P2P Link Model • Not affected • Multicast Capable Link Model • BS needs to implement multicast filtering

  16. Changes to Host Implementations • NBMA Link Model • None • P2P Link Model • ? • Multicast Capable Link Model • None

  17. Changes to Router Implementations • NBMA Link Model • Relay DAD • Address Cache • May not complete due to packet loss etc • P2P Link Model • Unique prefix assignment • Multicast Capable Link Model • Bridging is required

  18. Renumbering • NBMA Link Model • P2P Link Model • more signaling traffic comparing with shared prefix model • Multicast Capable Link Model

  19. SeND Support • All models support usage of SeND

  20. Applicability • NBMA Link Model • Mobile WIMAX and WiBro • P2P Link Model • Mobile WIMAX and WiBro • Multicast Capable Link Model • Fixed and Nomadic deployment
