Separating Ingredients: Sugar, Sand, and Iron Filings • You and your partner will be allowed 15 minutes to complete the following task: • Write a rough draft of a procedure that will effectively separate a mixture of SAND, SUGAR and IRON FILINGS. • The procedure should result in three separate piles of SAND, SUGAR and IRON FILINGS. • You will have use of the following materials to help you separate the mixture: (not all materials are necessary) 1. magnet 2. funnel and filter paper 3. fine mesh screen 4. hot plate 5. water
Reminders of Writing a Procedure 1. Procedure • Must include all information to perform the experiment: independent variable, dependent variable, constants, controls, materials, supplies 2. Formatting: 1. List the step by step process 2. Must be numbered 3. Use command sentences Example: 1. Turn off the lights. 4. One instruction per step 5. Include diagrams to illustrate the steps in the procedure
