  4. It’s all about relationships- right? The first person I must know is myself…. Self-Awareness “Human nature seems to endow people with the ability to size up everybody in the world but themselves”

  5. Personal Influence The ability to influence others is a key leadership competency. At a minimum, we use our influencing skills to get needed resources and to set those we lead on a particular course of direction. • Upward • Laterally • Downward • Outward

  6. Three Types of Influence Position Influence- Position influence is derived from your job position or title. You use your authority to meet your objective. Domineering Influence- Domineering influence is usually based on frustration and involves harsh behavior, elevated tones. The result is often hostility and passive-aggressive behavior. Interpersonal Influence- Unlike position or domineering influence, interpersonal influence has to be developed or earned.

  9. Understanding Political Savvy • Definition:  Identifies the internal and external politics that impact the work of the organization.  Approaches each problem situation with a clear perception of organizational and political reality, recognizes the impact of alternative courses of action.

  10. Political Competence It may be naive to suggest that all office/organizational politics are destructive or unethical. If you define politics in such a narrow and negative way, you may overlook the value of political awareness and skill. If political astuteness is combined with the right values, it can be an advantage to you, your team, and your organization- and ultimately, the families we serve.

  11. Reflection Exercise • Think of someone who has influenced you. What are that person’s characteristics. • How has that influence changed how you engage people?

  14. Definition • Stimulation or arousal of the mind, feelings, to a special activity or creativity

  15. Inspiration Versus Motivation

  16. Motivation • Motivation is the offering of incentive to accomplish a task – can be a carrot or a stick – defined as to prompt, spur, and induce.

  17. Inspiration • Inspiration is a force which moves us to act in unpredictable and extraordinary ways generally on our own terms. • Inspiration is a calling to become intrinsically better than we are with no apparent personal objective reward.
