  3. American Educational System Education in the United States is the responsibility of the individual states, not the Federal Government – so requirements vary from state to state. American public schools have four basic characteristics in common: they are locally controlled, free from religious influence, coeducational, and publicly supported by taxes

  4. Type of school age grades Kindergarten 5 0 Elementary school 6 - 11 1 - 6 Junior High or Middle school 12 - 13 7 - 8 (Senior) High school 14 – 17 9 – 12 College 4 years for a B.A or B.S degree University 2 - 3 years for M.A or M.S 2- 8 years for Ph.D

  5. Early childhood education In most areas free public school education starts at the age of four - kindergartens. Before attending kindergartens children aged 3 – 4 can go to nursery schools or day care centers. (tuition is usually charged here) Day care centers provide care for pre-school children of working mothers who need a place to leave their children all day. Some day care centers accept pre-schoolers from infancy on.

Kindergartens half-day sessions the child becomes accustomed to being separated from their mother, playing and sharing with other children, and following the directionsof a teacher Nursery school Nursery schools accept children from three to five years old half-day sessions ranging from twice a week to five days a week. Nursery schools usually charge tuition.

  7. Grammar / elementary school In the United States education is devided into 12 levels called grades. The first academic institution which children start attending at the age of six is called Grammar school or Elementary School. In some school systems, elementary school includes grades 1 through 8. The next 4 years are called high school. In other school systems, there are three divisikons Elementary school ( grades 1 – 6) Junior high school (grades 7 – 9) Senior high school (grades10 - 12)

  8. Grammar / elementary school Subjects: reading, arithmetic, language arts, social studies, music, art and physical education Students are grouped into classes. The class has the same teacher for most subjects. Only art, music and physical education are taught by teachers who specialize in these areas. Elementary school in California

High school Subjects (more specialized) : English (grammar and literature) social studies (American and European history, government) mathematics ( algebra, geometry, and trigonometry) biology, chemistry, physics foreign language music, art, and physical education Students meet a different teacher and a different group of students for each subject.

  10. Higher education American education on the college level is provided by more than 3,000 institutions. Some of them are supported privately and some by local and/or state government. Most are coeducational. Degrees After completing four academic years with acceptable grades -Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree. One or two academic years of study beyond the bachelor’s degree - master’s degree A Ph.D. degree usually takes at least three years beyond the master’s.

  11. College Grades From highest to lowest, run A, B, C, D, F. F is a failing grade. College students must maintain at least a low C average in order to remain in school. Campus life A college community is an interesting and lively place. Students become involved in many different activities - extracurricular, religious, social, and athletic.

  12. The Ivy League Some of the best-known private universities in the United States are located in the Northeast. They are the oldest ones in America as well, known informally as the Ivy League. These include Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, and University of Pennsylvania, with the first three known as “The Big Three”.

  13. Harvard University • Harvard is located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, established in 1636. Named after its first benefactor, John Harvard of Charlestown, a young minister who left his library and half his estate to the new institution.

  14. Yale University • Yale University was founded in 1701.

  15. Princeton University Princeton University is located in the heart of Princeton, NewJersey.
