  2. What you will learn! • How to find the probability of simple events. • How to use a sample to predict the actions of a larger group.

  3. What you really need to know! Probability is the chance some event will happen. It is a ratio!

  4. Vocabulary

  5. Example 1: Suppose a number cube is rolled. What is the probability of a 4 or a 5? There are 6 possible outcomes. 2 of which we want (Favorable).

  6. Example 2: Suppose two number cubes are rolled. Find the probability of rolling two identical numbers.

  7. Example 2: Suppose two number cubes are rolled. Find the probability of rolling two identical numbers. There are 36 possible outcomes. 6 of which we want (Favorable).

  8. Example 3: The table shows the results of an experiment in which a coin was tossed. Find the experimental probability of tossing a coin and getting tails for this experiment.

  9. There was a total of 25 tosses. 11 were tails.

  10. Example 4: The table shows the results of an experiment in which a coin was tossed. Find the experimental probability of tossing a coin and getting heads for this experiment.

  11. There was a total of 25 tosses. 14 were heads.

  12. Example 5: Miss Newman surveyed her class to see which sports they preferred watching. 44% preferred football, 28% basketball, 20% soccer, and 8% tennis. Out of 560 students in the entire school, how many would you expect to say they preferred watching basketball?

  13. The survey said 28% of the sample preferred basketball. 28% of 560 .28 x 560 156.8 About 157 students.
