  1. U.S. History Chapter 6 Struggles in the Middle Colonies

  2. British Plan Separate New England from the rest of the colonies. Burgoyne 

  3. Howe Howe decided to attack Philadelphia by sea and capture the American capital, to win the war quickly.

  4. Philadelphia • Philadelphia was quickly and easily captured.

  5. Washington Washington moved his army to Pennsylvania and fought a few battles before setting up winter quarters at Valley Forge.

  6. Burgoyne’s Attack Burgoyne 9,500 men Col. St Leger 900 men plus 1000 Indian allies. Burgoyne 

  7. Burgoyne’s Attack Burgoyne went ahead with his plan, not knowing that Howe wasn’t coming up to meet him.

  8. American response Facing the British attack was General Horatio Gates, and General Benedict Arnold. Arnold 

  9. Burgoyne met Gates and Arnold at the Battle of Saratoga and surrendered most of his army 5,000 men.

  10. Saratoga’s significance February 6, 1778 France recognized the U.S. as a country and signed an alliance with us.

  11. Saratoga’s Significance This was the turning point of the war!
