Victory over Japan • From the bombing of Pearl Harbor in Dec. 1941 to May 1942, the United States suffered numerous humiliating defeats in Asia at the hands of the Japanese…one such defeat was in the Philippines - where MacArthur was forced to retreat to Australia…and soldiers left behind were captured and forced to march north on the Bataan Peninsula…

In Nov. 1943, US launched its “island-hopping” campaign in order to force Japan to surrender, or be invaded… 11/43 – US takes Tarawa 6/44 – US takes Saipan 8/44 – US takes Guam 3/45 – US takes Philippines 2/45 – US takes Iwo Jima 4/45 – US takes Okinawa By May 1945 the US was 350 miles from Japan…but still Japan would not surrender! Closing in on Japan…

Despite the warnings of Albert Einstein, in 1941 the US began a program to build an atomic bomb – the Manhattan Project… On July 16, 1945, the US detonated the world’s first atomic bomb…we threatened the Japanese with it…they refused to surrender… August 6, 1945 – “Little Boy” was dropped on Hiroshima…no surrender! August 9,1945 – “Fat Man” on Nagasaki…on August 15,1945 the Japanese surrendered! Forcing Japan to surrender…
