Jennie Granrud, NW, Donna Fricke, SW, Jody Breker, SE and I cover NE For the past four (4) years Student Loans of North Dakota (SLND), a division of the Bank of North Dakota, has provided Choices Explorer for all middle schools and Choices Planner and TestGEAR for all high schools, including private schools and home schooled students in the state. Xap products are geared toward college students and also has a product similar to TestGEAR. For the past two years. North Dakota has had four (4) trainers, enabling us to reach more schools and provide more individualized training Prior to that, one person did all the training state-wide. Although Choices training is our focus, we also provide professional development training opportunities in our respective regions and, at times, state-wide. 4. If students don’t see what’s in it for them, they are less likely to be engaged. Remember, we are all enhancing and building skills all the time. If students can make the connection between learning and their “passion” in life, they are more likely to be engaged in what they are doing. In other words, they are asking “How can this help me achieve my dream for my life?”If students don’t see what’s in it for them, they are less likely to be engaged. 5. How do math, English, social studies and other classes help students in their careers? Many occupations require math skills. Almost every occupation requires communication, either verbally or written. Social skills are developed through interaction with other students, teachers and staff. Technical skills learned in vocational classes provide hard skills. We use skills all the time, whether they are soft, transferrable or hard skills Challenge students to understand the correlation between their career passion and what they do everyday. How do math, English, social studies and other classes help students in their careers? 6. Think about it-if you fail to plan, you plan to fail. How many of you have gone into the weekend, or the week for that matter, with no clear cut goal? I have! Man, when I don’t have a plan for my time, I can waste more of that precious commodity than you can imagine and all of a sudden, the weekend is over and I have not accomplished anything and all those projects are still waiting! I have two grandson’s attending NDSU. The oldest one knows exactly what he wants to do and the younger one is struggling. He has no clear cut goal in mind, like Mike does. He is taking general classes, but still is unsure and he is struggling with deciding which classes he should take. Career explorationThink about it-if you fail to plan, you plan to fail. 8. Help them prepare their “story”, the most important literary project they will ever undertake. All of these items contribute to our value, which we continually define, refine, enhance and grow. By defining career clusters, students learn which classes will help them achieve their goal or passion in life, and this connection contributes to the development and implementation of a plan of study to guide them on the path to their careers. Remember, If you don’t know where you are going, any road will do. Don’t leave things to chance-be proactive, not reactive. Exposing students to high demand and high wage jobs, within their chosen cluster, helps them focus their career path.Help them prepare their “story”, the most important literary project they will ever undertake. 14. Student Portfolios In order to access all the resources available to students, they must create a portfolio. Some schools use a standardized username and password, such as first initial, last name and their birth date, student ID number, or the last four numbers of their phone number for their password. Usernames and passwords should use the KISS principle and be short and simple. Students should create only one portfolio and if they forget how to access it, they can get the information from their school counselor, who is usually the Choices administrator. In order to access all the resources available to students, they must create a portfolio.
