That if I have any preconceived ideas about a, a, a case or a topic that, that is set aside. And I am conscious of it but it does not inform the opinion.” Explains how her personal identity informs her legal philosophy: “I’m African American, I’m a woman, and I’m gay. So I encompass three different experiences, if you will, in, in our society. And how that informs the way that I view a defendant or a plaintiff is, I mean, it, it, is there. It does not influence the result but it certainly influences how I view the person as they’re brought before me.”

Dempsey, Jr. Excerpted from an interview conducted by The HistoryMakers … Recalls his first day as a judge on the Fulton County Superior Court: “Well, I came in and I go out and get on the bench, and I’m sitting there, and I’m looking around. And I’m just looking around and the sheriff comes on over after a little bit and says, he leans over and says, Judge, you got to start the court (laughter). And so I had, I was sitting there and forgot that I had to start court, you know. And so, it was a great way (laughter) to start a career.” Reflects on his service as a judge: “I was called to the, to be a judge. I wasn’t, that wasn’t my goal, it wasn’t my objective. But like a lot of things, when folk in the community said, Dempsey, you need to do this for us, that’s why I got involved in this.”
