Enhancing Home Accessibility: Elevators & Universal Design for Seniors

Retrofitting an elevator into a home can be challenging without thoughtful design considerations. Options like vertical lifts, hoists, and living elevators offer alternatives for enhancing mobility between levels. Our Senior Housing Master Plan aims to educate residents on Universal Design (UD) features and prepare homes for future disabilities. We emphasize strengthening UD guidelines, promoting "VISIT-Ability," which includes features like no-step entrances, wider doorways, and accessible bathroom designs. Together, we can create homes that are accommodating for all.

  1. Elevator Options • Retrofitting an elevator into a home is difficult, unless space is provided in original design. • Vertical lift assistance, hoists and LEV are options to assist in moving between levels.

  2. Senior Housing Master Plan • Educate residents about UD features and the likelihood of future disability. • Strengthen UD Guidelines as market demands more features. • Educate residents, realtors, & remodelers about using UD features to renovate existing homes. • Educate residents & homebuilders about the value of “VISIT-Ability” for all new residential construction.

  3. VISIT-Ability VISIT-Ability includes: • No-step entrance to the main living area via wide entrance door • Wider interior doorways and halls • Lower placement of light switches, thermostats, doorbells, etc. • Higher placement of outlets and other receptacles • A half bath or full bath with at least 32” of clearance to toilet
